I have used this medication with discus for fin and tail rot.

This medication can be used for a variety of external bacterial infections on fish. It is effective against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. It is listed as effective against gill disease and open sores.

I have used it in the following dose.
First dose = double dose= 2 capsules per 10 gal water
day 2= 25% wc then add 0ne capsule per 10 gallons water
day 3= 25% wc then add one capsule per 10 gal water
day 4 = same as day 3
I have used it for 8 days in a row.
days 5, 6, 7, 8, are the same as day 4
then on day 9 a 50% wc


This medication contains nitrofurazone and furazolidone. When used in conjunction they are more effective. It also contains a small amount of methylene blue and will color the water blue. This small amount of methylene blue is not enough to be effective as a treatment by itself.

I have used this medication in conjunction with non iodized salt at 1 tbls "per gallon water". the salt fights fungus and the furan 2 fights bacteria.

I have also used this medication in combination with maroxy (the maroxy was only used for the first 5 days)

Do not use carbon in the filter during medication use as carbon removes the medication from the water.
Furan 2 should not harm the biological filter.Your results may vary depending on water conditions.

Great info, Ardan, thanks. It's a good idea to use gloves when applying Furan 2, as both nitrofurazone (carcinogen) and furazolidone (possible mutagen) are potentially nasty chemicals.

How long (shelf life) does furan 2 last? Dr. foster have only 100 cap bottle for sale. I only have 3 tanks and just want to keep some common med just in case.

Hi Kenny,
I am not sure on the shelf life other than it is at least 2 years.
I bought a bottle earlier this yr and it expires in 2006.
