Default power head driven sponge filter

I was wondering if anybody uses the typical air driven sponge filters but using a power head on them rather than an air stone. How do you compare the performance with the power head over just air driven?

I've also heard that with the increased water flow with the power head that the sponges don't get clogged and don't need to be clean. Is that true?

    Thanks,
    GARY

I use power heads on sponge filters in all my tanks except the 20 gallon breeder tanks and they work great 8)

When I tried it, it didn't take long before my sponges were all caved in.
Maybe I was using to large of power head.

Some of the finer cell foam gets soft as they age and flow is restricted causing the colapse.
I make most of my own from Aqua Clear foam blocks.... 8)

    Hi all,
I use powerheads with all my sponges. I have a large pond sponge block and a AC500 sponge on two of my large ones, with a smaller one on the smaller PH. I also have an airline exhausting right up through the sponge, into the impeller of the small one for aeration. They work great and pickup a lot of debris. Never cleaning them, though................... "Yikes" :
