Picked up my first beginner DSLR yesterday! It was too good of a deal to pass up. First shots I've ever taken with a DSLR, straight out of the box and with the standard 18-55mm kit lens. :antlers:

Very cool Eddie, very nice pictures and congrats on the new camera. I love my new camera and like you I get nice results with the camera out of the box. Does your camera do video? Also which camera did you get?

Thanks Pat, it does have full HD video. It was a toss up between the Nikon D3200 or the D5100 but most reviews rated the D5100 as the better camera since the D3200s main benefit was 24mp which I guess doesn't really matter. But with the 2 cameras going head to head, the base had a killer sale on the D5100 with a 2 lens kit bundle for the price of the d3200 so that made it easy for me to decide. :)

Cool thing is, it can be used for more then just fish! Beautiful Spain, your son/family, fish, nature in general.....you'll get good use out of a DSLR.

So, Eddie, tell me: the difference between a high quality digital camera and a DSLR is the ability to manually focus the lens? I have a decent digital camera, but without the ability to manually focus, which drives me crazy because I loose a lot of good shots. Am I right in this? Thanks. -Don

How about a video Eddie :)

I'll give it a shot when I get a chance. Leaving in a few days for Germany but will definitely try to give it a shot maybe tomorrow or Friday.

Don, a DSLR has way more functions than a standard digital camera and it can be used for many different applications using different lenses. I havent delved into the DSLR world much so I couldn't tell you all the pros and cons over a standard digital camera.

Hey Don, here's a pretty good article that explains the differences between a digital compact camera and a DSLR.
