I'm proud to announce the Florida "Aquarium Fish" Expo for June of 2013 in Fort Myers, Florida. Among the list of outstandng speakers, Jack Watley "IN PERSON" will be giving a talk about discus. The fish show will include categories for discus that will be judged by at least one NADA representative. We encourage everyone with Discus to participate and enjoy the Show.

A full list of fish classes, sponsors and vendors will be posted on the fish show website in January.

I doubt I go but you never know. It is my understanding that there are not any NADA certified judges going. I don't know if that matters to anyone or not but I take NADA judging very seriuosly...LOL. Of course a round trip plane ticket could solve the "no certified judge" problem.......LOL.

Just so everyone is clear this is not a Discus NADA show but it's an all species fish show and Discus NADA is sponsoring the discus class. There will be discus in the show. There are a few discus speakers scheduled like Jack Wattley, Tony Silva and Joe Gargas. There is even a side trip to Snookin21's facility. I plan on going to the show.

There are a few discus vendors within a couple of hours of the show. Florida Discus, Wattley Discus, Discus Origins, Angelfish USA, Joe Gargas and Snookin21.

Just to clarify, as part of the NADA sponsorship it has been agreed that the discus classes would be judged using the standards of the NADA. We will have at least one representative from the NADA present to judge and ensure the standards of the organization are upheld. If show sanctioning is within the realm of possibility I’d be happy to talk with someone at the NADA about making that happen.

We have already been sanctioned by the American killifish Association and are working with other organizations like the ACA and ALA to get sanctioning from them as well. As always anyone can feel free to contact me through the show website. Also as part of the show there is the opportunity for a trip to Snookin 21's fish house. You will be allowed to buy fish from John and arrange for him to ship them home for you if needed. In addition both Jack Watley "in person" and Joe Gargas will be giving talks, and we will have some of Jack's discus up for bid in our auction.

I believe to be sanctioned it would require a NADA senor judge. Currently there are only 3. Dick Au, Mat, and myself. If I attend the show I don't mind judging but I don't know that I am going to be able to make it. Time will tell.

Jack didn't show up for the talk unfortunately. It was given by Gabe... And it was a very good one. I learned a lot

Not a single discus at the auction unfortunately.. Kinda strange. Lots of danios to be had thought. A certain member of the above group was stockpiling pepper cories... Thought she will remain nameless :-)

Obviously, a lot of us were hoping to meet jack in person and hear his voice.. Ask him sign our books... Alas.. It wasn't meant to be. Maybe some other time.

All in all. I thought it was a good show and I was glad to make some new friends

Congratulations to Marion Allen (Florida Discus) and Chad Adams (Sabres1). Marion won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Solid discus class and she won 2nd and 3rd place in the Patterned class. Chad won 1st place in the Patterned class and he won the Best of Show for the Discus division.

As the chairman of the event I was very sad that Jack did not show up. We did not know he wasn't coming until it was time for Jack to speak and he still wasn't there. To add insult to injury Jack was the one bringing the fish for auction. I have to thank Gabe for stepping up and giving a great presentation in Jacks absence.

Congratulations to Marion on her outstanding fish and for almost sweeping the entire discus portion of the show. Under less than ideal conditions Marion was able to show her superior fish keeping abilities and adapt to the situation. I also have to thank the ADA and the entire discus community for making this a great event. We look forward to your continued support and we pledge to expand the discus portion of the show in 2015.

A few more pics from Sunday/Monday after the judging and settled in a little better. I'll have to admit I was partial to one fish. LOL.


Honestly, It hurts when you raise a fish from an egg, baby it for a year and a half, drive almost 10 hours to support a first time show, win your class and the best in the discus class with your only fish, spawned from Stendker parents against 10 imported Ricky Lim discus, and the chairman doesn't remember you. Tough. I'll be happy to give advice on how to focus on Discus for the 2015 show.

I'll be happy to give advice on how to focus on Discus for the 2015 show.
I'm happy to take all comments and any advice on how we can improve the show experience for anyone and everyone, feel free to shoot me an email at my showchair email address. I hope that with 2 years notice we might be able to have a fully sanctioned discus show as part of the Expo. Also don't be offended Chad, I didn't forget you, I'm just getting back to normal after only about 6 hours sleep in 4 days. Your fish was very cool, and we were lucky to have both you and that fish at our show.

I'm just a firm believer that the way to advance discus in the US will be through the hobbyist.
This is where my comment was directed. We can't forget the hobbyist.

Sorry to hear on the conditions Chad, it can be tricky in a any fish show.
How was Wattleys speech?

Yeah Jim. It was Touch n Go for a little bit. I was afraid to even put my guy into the water. Took him several hours to get accustomed to the water. Had a little Tail burn but that was it. Seemed to help adding some Fritz. I know Marion had 1 casualty:(

Of course biggest disappointment was No Jack Wattley. We figured it was a longshot anyhow and would be our last chance ever to see him. Its no ones fault as he is an older gentleman and I'm sure he tried. Gabe was a good sport to step in to let the show go on.


Hate to cut in on the expo thread.. I was there too.. Had a nice time meeting Chad, Jerry, Larry, josie, and Marion.
Marion 's discus were beauts.. I esp liked the platinum and the red snakeskin.
Jack didn't show up for the talk unfortunately. It was given by Gabe... And it was a very good one. I learned a lot.
All in all. I thought it was a good show and I was glad to make some new friends

This is what I like to see more in shows, people like Chad who breed, grow and show (and win) with their own Discus. You won't see that much anymore.
