View Full Version : how to build a refugium? **For Dummies :)

I"m just wondering if anyone would know or like to share how I might possibly be able to convert an old 10 or 20 gallon into a refugium.

I have a 55 gallon discus tank and a few smaller empty 10 and 20 gallons laying around. I also have old fluval 404 that still works just the canister and lid leaks so i was thinking I could just use it for the pump.

any thoughts?

keep it simple with Poret foam dividers. If you search for refugium or sump (right top corner on the page) you will come across a lot of posts showing how they did their sumps with poret foam dividers.

Is your tank drilled with an overflow

Here is a picture of a refugium/wet-dry I am currently selling. As you can see, the top part is the refugium and has been drilled on the top right and bottom left. It is acrylic (30 gal). All you need is small divider to allow the water to gradually flow into the wet-dry or it can be plumbed to return to your tank. The large center area allows for any type of media like what was metioned using poret foam for freshwater or live rock for saltwater.

You can also hold your heater (heaters) in it and with a light, you can grow plants in it as well.
