Big fan of Red 2!

It's the biggest of the three, but I don't like it's bars. I'll have to get some tank shots of it when Red 4 gets added.

Me too Bud, on both counts. Also hoping the red continues to come out in all of them. Really anxious to see what all of them look like as adults. Thanks Bud, Eddie.

Imagine what the pictures would have looked like with a good camera. Another 6 months and I'll have a guy from work come get some good ones, unless we have a MWDA heart making meeting before then.

Yea, they seem to be digging on it. I keep wondering if the darker background will have any affect on their color development. Red 4 is finishing up a metro treatment in the 10 gallon, will add it to the 55 sometime later this week.

Red 4 the color changer?

That would be the one. Hoping it's nothing two weeks of metro doesn't/didn't clear up. It looks different than the other three. It always has somewhat, but not sure what to attribute that to or if it was that pronounced before.

Nice pups indeed Keith. A few things on the brown based reds. You will find it can take as long as 9 months for this phenotype to get it's adult colors and possibly Halo's. When deciding on which ones you want to keep, if your planning on mating the siblings, be sure to keep a few of the ones that tend to be more brown than red. Typically these will be the males, and if you only pick out the redest of the batch, you might very well end up with all females.

I plan on growing them all out Rick, I've got an empty 72 they'll grow into eventually. Just sort of depends what the pairs do when the next move will be. Still trying to decide if the 4th red is sick or just that much different from the other three. I'm on about day 9 of the metro treatment...plan to go 2 full weeks. Not seeing the real dark coloration I was before treatment began fortunately. Maybe I've got 3 males and a female.

I belive the dosage on the metro is 5 days.WP would go 10,and I do the same.14 might be excessive. The only time I would maybe treat longer is if I was doing a group of fish, and into the treatment, another one seemed to be infected, then I would re-start the count.

I added a picture of the fourth red to the original post. It was in the hospital tank getting metro when the rest were moved. Sticking the same picture here so you don't have to go looking for it after reading this post. Also a couple tank shots after adding the eighth fish. You can still see it's a little darker than the rest, but maybe it's just always going to be that way.

That's what Jeff's calling them, not me. Kenny sold them as Red Cover/Virgin Red F1 crosses, so at least when I'm not drinking in Jeff's presence I guess I'm calling them F2s. Of course since the F1s turned out to have a recessive golden gene in them I'm not sure what they should be called. The goldens are what I really wish I had a good name for. Red Golden Diamonds was tossed out as one possibility by Rod, we'll see what he thinks when they grow out and color up.

Thanks Rick. Maybe I can get you some F3s some day. I dropped a hunk of pink granite in the tank. It's acted as an initial spawning site for many a pair in the past, so it'll be there some day down the road when pairing starts, assuming I don't move them before then for some reason. I'll post one more video of the digs with the "new" stone later.

Keith Perkins

Hopeful future spawning site. Wondering if I'm seeing any pairing, they seem seperated by color most of the time now. That wouldn't be so bad.

Well, I've had a setback. About 2 1/2 weeks ago I noticed I suddenly had leftover food in the tank. I did a PP treatment. Three days later it looked like no one was eating, saw some white feces/intestinal lining from one. I started with a treatment of standard dose metro. Next morning the reds had darkened up. Within 3 days I think they were doing a bit better, starting to eat. I did a big WC from a reservoir I discovered was 5 degrees colder than the tank and that seemed to set them back to square one. After 3 more days finally had one of eight eating. Upped the dose to 150% and upped the temp from 85 to 89. Finally tonight came down to do a WC and it appeared they were begging for food. Gave them a half normal ration of my beefheart/seafood mix, pretty much all I feed, except the occasional frozen or freeze dried CBWs. One by one, then suddenly a group almost all of them hit away at it tonight. I think I'm around the bend.

Thanks, I wouldn't quite say normal yet, but definitely way better than they were Brandon and hopefully back to 100% today or tomorrow. I had 8 fish that attacked food before, now I've got at least 5 or 6 feeding after a few minutes. I'd been feeding half rations, I started inching that up a little yesterday afternoon.

Close call, glad they made it. Like the goldens.

Thanks Poco, I really like the goldens too, and the red's aren't far behind. I work hard keeping up on WCs etc. hoping to avoid this kind of stuff because frankly I'm just not that confident in my ability to deal with sick fish. On top of that it seems I'm usually way too slow in reacting, sort of the opposite of the norm around here I guess. I'm really wanting to work with this line, so the possibility of losing many and setting back the rest wasn't exactly providing pleasant thoughts.

Good news for sure Keith. Hope they all make it back to normal.

Me too Jeff, thanks.

Keith Perkins

Well tonight I switched things around and fed the fish when I got home late from work. I tossed in a 75% ration and went upstairs to eat. Upon my return to do some WCs all food was gone. As I watched them as I did WCs on other tanks there was pecking order activity going on. I'm thinking most if not all of them are pretty much good.

Two more days of eating everything I toss in the tank. This morning I forgot to take heart out of the freezer so I asked my wife to feed them breakfast when she got going...she forgot. So I fed them two pieces of heart at about 5:30 and a few minutes ago I offered them a hunk of Dan's FDBW's with tetra bits...they hit it as I was reaching down with it to stick it on the glass.

Keith Perkins
02-09-2013, 10:01 PM
I've eased the temperature back down and they've slowed down some. I may have to think about boosting it back up. Getting ready to give them a feeding of loose CBW with ProGrowth that came with my order. I bought a 100 grams of ProMore and when the package arrived I tossed the contents on the coffee table in the fishcave. My wife noticed her old toy poodle sniffing near them a bit when she was downstairs doing laundry and thought about moving the food but didn't. So I come home Friday after work and my wife is getting dressed after showering and the dog slinks up from the basement. I find in the fishcave loose worms along 4 feet of the floor rug and the sample bag maybe half full. A real dog would have eaten all the bags contents. Thought maybe I'd have a standard poodle this morning, but I guess the stuff isn't that miraculous.
