OK, so I have to ask a question - did you buy them all from the same shop at the same time from the same group?

I thought pterophyllum scalare & pterophyllum altum were two separate species of freshwater angelfish with the face of the p. scalare being more rounded & the p. altum more of a beak shape?

Could someone please provide a little insight to an angelfish noob?

Thanks.

@Taz - some wild scalare have the upturned nose like the altum, thats why these particular fish have a common name of Peruvian Altum. Its a way of making the fish more marketable, just like all the different names for discus strains. If you dig deep into wild angels, you'll find that different collection points have different characteristics - just like wild caught discus.
Like with heckels, true Altums can look different depending on which river they are collected from.

I stopped keeping fish around 2001/2002, right before online fish forums took off - getting back into the hobby for the past 2.5 years now & I have seen fish I never even new existed. The internet & forums such as this one, are just enabling my fish addiction haha

Ahh...
Thank you very much for the response.

I totally understand what you mean on the changes in the hobby due to the internet. I stopped keeping fish in 1995 & just started back last year.

There are officially only three specis of angelfish, scalare, leopoldi and altum. Unofficially, what we know as a scalare are probably a flock of species. Rio negro altum is probably the true P.scalare. Red shoulders, rio nanay (peru altum), and other localities are probably different species. Tailtail sign for this is that the other two species (altum and lepoldi) live only in certain watersheds, while "scalare" can be found in all the amazon, orinoco and guayans. Its highly unlikely that that would be only one species living in a such huge area. especially if you consider biogeography of similar heroiini clades, like uararos, mesonautas and discus.
