I have 4 48" T5s on my 90 gal (24" tall). 2 sets, each set on timers (along with ballasts) all built in to the fixture. Store bought because I would not know how to make my own!

Depending on depth you may need to consider more light.

Go LED and never look back.

Never replace another bulb
use 1/2 or less the amount of energy
DIMMABLE !!!!
and oh yeah they're DIMMABLE !!!

I would research the LEDs and what you would need for mid/low light level plants.
See what the PAR level is at 24".
I have a Deep Blue reflector which does the job and has some nice features but has very cheaply made leg braces. Both of mine cracked and the replacements cracked. I finally took them off and put the hood on the tank.
If you have a central tank brace, four 2 bulb 36" T5s might do the trick.

Plants seem to flourish a nice T5HO. I personally use Sunblaster T5HO rigged into the canopy.

I have a 60"wide tank that is 25" deep with 4X30" T5 dual bulb lights. The bulbs are actually 22" long. I just switched to T5 Zoo Med brand bulbs made in Germany I picked "Flora Sun" to bring out the reds and blues in my fish. They label the bulbs "Maximum Plant Growth" I do not know if that is true, maybe it is, as I have Sword Plants that grew well with Colormax bulbs. Zoo Med does have other bulbs so check with them or maybe Kens Fish where I bought my bulbs. I do not know if there are 36"Zoo Med bulbs available at this time.

I have re-thought my previous post. I am getting a lot more plant growth with these bulbs. In fact, too much! I have many Sword Plants and they have many more leaves and much more bunched in leaves. It is more difficult to clean the plants at their crowns where the dirt ends up. I have decided to cull half my plants and trim them every two weeks.

Are your bulbs t5ho or t5? I can't seem to find any Zoo Med T5 bulbs for my fixture, just the t5ho.
