A sump has a lot of uses. More so for saltwater setups but useable in freshwater tanks as well. It can give you a greater volume of water to filter, hide your equipment like heaters. It eliminates the use of canister and hang on back filters.

You have to decide what media to put in the sump for its general purpose that you need. Most people use a sump on bigger tanks over 75 gallons.

I just made my own build for my 50 gallon reef tank and it works great. It was cheap build as well, under $90.00
