So I have a half cooked plan to setup an above ground pool this summer and place and growout some of the discus outside. In April people here move delicate fish outside for growout and move them back inside for the cooler months in October. My plan is to use an intex pool and will target a 33in x 12 foot circular pool which will hold 1700 gallons. I will cycle the pool with some pond pure (if practical) and place some experimental fish in the pool to ensure they can actually live. The pool will have a pump for areation and circulation, a partial sand bottom and driftwood to provide cover. I will also use netting used by greenhouses to cover the pool to protect from birds, coons etc.

I place credit for this idea fully on the head of Nandi as he is doing something similar in Hungry with the Xingu F1s.

Oh wow Pat that sounds like an adventure. How much water changes will you be doing.

Good luck Pat! I am sure you won't be doing daily water changes on that baby :D

What do you have in mind for temp control?

Walter, that is sort of TBD (to be determined) Most likely a couple of times a week, not sure of the percentage and this reminds me to check with Nandi to see what he plans on.

The sun Baber, the pool will be half in sun, half in shade. The volume of water helps to protect with large temperture changes over short time periods (or at least I hope so ;)) Summers are 90s in the day and 70s in the evenings. Days are longer.

This is something I've always wanted to see done. Living in Seattle in a condo doesn't lend itself to this kind of experimenting but I'll follow your progress with great interest.

What an exciting project! I will follow it with great interest.

Questions: you will be able to see the discus only from above, right? Is it possible to add a transparent window in the pool so that you can see the discus? Just wondering...

Look at the shape of those discus. WOW.

There you go Pat, discus farm in your own backyard. Keith, Bill, Brandon and myself will come down and help you scoop them out like in the picture.

Thanks Mauro and you are correct. Will only be able to see from above. I would love a window but could add serious cost to the price of the pool.

Certainly not at first and would have to heat the pools in the winter. Could be one way to make discus profitable in the US. ;)

OK guys, this is in the works for this summer. We are talking a 12 foot round above ground pool with 33 inch sides...about 1700 gallons. I need to design a filter for this. Nandi and I were talking about a brute can with some sort of media (like rocks) where the water is pulled into holes punched along the bottom of the brute can with a pond pump inside the can pushing water out of the top of the can into the pool. I have never had a pond before so open to comments/suggestions on a filter/flow for this thing.

Might what to check out something called hydro corn, not sure about the name, they use in hydroponics, baked clay balls, cheap comes in fifty pound bags. Very porous. Not sure about the name though.

I'd look into the different types of things people use for koi pond filtration. Once upon a time I had a 55 gallon drum with settlement chamber at bottom up through several layers of matala and bio on top. I really like the K1 moving beds too that I've seen people build.

I use those hydroballs for hydroponics, they are good, light, also there are smaller white ones that float though its a pain lol they spill and get in my koi pond I hate those ones now. I have a 15 ft by 20ft dog pool with a Beast of a sand filter, would make the best fish filter its awesome, but alas its too cold here to do something like yhis or I would.

So cant wait to see this project unfold should be great ! Just keep those herons out lol

I really like my sand filters also never needed to be changed. Only back flushed once in a while after a very long period of time, I mean, long like years. Eventually the sand breaks down and needs to be replaced.
