Good luck, Pat. I have also been considering heckels recently. Do you know if they are more fragile or more robust than browns/blues?

A 40 breeder at first Mauro and only four for now. They are the little guys, about 4 inches or so. Perhaps a future breeding project as these guys are small.
Cool.

Thanks Yun, no clue if they are more delicate, some places I have heard yes, other places no harder then other wilds. I will just have to experience this myself. So for now I will treat them like my other wilds vs my F1s, which are in full tap. My wilds are in a tap/RO mix.

Thanks Al, who knows. Maybe once these guys are grown (in like a year or two) I will throw them in the big tank with almost pure RO water and we shall see if any magic happens. :D I know....long, long shot but one can dream.

Awesome Pat! Heckels are my favorites from all the wilds. Good luck with them may be you will break the Heckel code in North America, I believe no one in NA has bred them but I could be wrong too.

Pat, i hope you succed in being the first american in recent history which has breed pure heckels. And as a women, you receive double points. As far as i have read in german articles, the recipe is this: soft, acid water (but not extrmes as first)+fresh water +live foods. I would recommend, that you first raise them to happy, fat adults and then transfer them to very soft and very acid water (almost pure ro) i a large aquarium. Did you consider making your own pond for contunious supply of live food?
Second Hand Pat
02-28-2013, 11:13 AM
plecocicho, I plan on just growing out the heckels for now and considering maintaining them in a ROP/tap vs a pure tap mix. When they are adults I will cross that bridge. The pond or pool will be a source for live foods naturally over time but I intend to provide the normal foods I feed now and monitor how it goes over time. When the fish are inside for cooler weather the pool will be put away. I do maintain red wiggler colonies for live food currently.

The heckels started eating today and exploring the tank. If I approach them want to go behind the sponge. They are not quite ready for pictures yet but I will take eating and looking good as a start. :)

Glad to hear they are eating Pat! Those are gonna be some lookers for sure!
Heckels have always been my favorite wilds, with the reds a close second. Then I saw the Curipera with the heckel-like middle bar and decided those were my dream wilds.
One day when I have a proper fish room with a proper way to filter and store water, wild discus will be mine. Or maybe some F1s from Pat. :D

Here are some pictures of the heckels. These are beautiful fish and they have really grown on me. I did lose one to a bacteria infection. Made me sad :( I asked Mark to save me one, well actually two giving me a group of five.

Hi Neon, these are called Demini Blue Heckel so I do not believe they are considered a blueface heckel per say. So far we are getting along just fine :)
