Normally mine sink in 24 to 48 hours squeezing out air a couple times.

I squeeze my sponge filter for over two weeks. Finally i figure why mine keep flow to the top because during my wc i have micro bubble on the water which always attract to it. after i take care the micro bubble the sponge filter has no longer issue. I would think normal conditions would be about 24-48 hours.

+1 also this doesn't happen if you use the hydro pro series sponges on them

Sorry. This was happened on ati sponges. I did not order pro series because it came in black. It was the regular ATI sponge from kensfish.com

my sponge filters have a weighted base. I use sponge filters as pre filters to my undergravel filter in a 20 gallon tank. Power head sits on the sponge filter and blows water/air through a 90 degree elbow that connects to the stand pipe of the undergravel filter. one Penguin 660R power head on each stand pipe (180 gphx2 = 360 gph). this does not create current but does have alot of flow.

When I put the sponge filter in the Bare Bottom tank it sank fine as well as it was a weighted base.

Put the sponge itself in the tank squeeze the air out and re assemble under water and it will sink right away.

Thanks for the tips guys. Mine are ati sponges they also have the weighted base, but they are gray, not the black sponge so they are a little finer and hold air beter. Next round of sponge if i have the same problem I will give it a shot.

I just got in a large ATI gray filter pro 5 soaked it in a bucket of tank water over night and it sank right to the bottom.

With the ATI filters you could add some aquarium gravel or marbles inside the base using the little extension tube that goes between the filter and base to give you the room for the weight.

I love my hydrosponges
