Finally separated the Cuipeua fry from the parents in the 230 so now they are in their own little fry tank. They are in a 10 for a couple of weeks since the spawn is so small. A couple of the fry do not look to good and may be culled if they do not perk up in a couple of days.

It takes a bit of pre-planning to catch these little guys in the 230. Even divided the space is huge. Way bigger than your normal breeding tank. So best to do a 50% WC so you can lower the water and pull the wood. It took about two hours to get it all done. The last fry took the longest as he has figured out how to evade the net. The fry are already starting to eat and are not pacing the tank.

Thanks Josie, curious to see how these grow compared to the tefe F1. I think a couple of these might have a centerbar like mom.

Good luck. I know the last time I had to catch fish out of my big tank I did a big water change and used a piece of plexiglass to section the fish off in a smaller space. Still took a while for some of the wily ones as they jumped over the plexi.

Good luck! They are looking great. What diet and WC regimes are you planning for these little ones?

Joan, were you catching fry or adults? I find if I go slow and easy with the adults I do not need to lower the water.

Mauro, for now BBS and Al's FDBWs, Later flake and a seafood mix. As far as WCs two 90% a day for now.

I actually wasn't catching discus at the time, a lot of smaller quick fish. Drove me nuts. I agree, catching discus is best taken slowly!

I have caught tetras in the big tank, for sure a large PITA.

Pat,
Catching dime sized discus in a planted 75 gallon is like herding cats (ask how I know.... ) put them in the breeder box hanging inside the tank and they slipped through the slots at the bottom of the box so I got to go get my other box that had a plate with small holes to cover the slots, catch the fry, and put them in the larger breeder box. I ordered the discus in as dime sized and now the are 4-6 inches with the exception of one runt at 2.25-2.5 inches

Good luck with your pojects and let me know if you sell any of the fry/juvenilles. I like watching them grow.

Dave

Thanks Dave and nice job growing out those dime sized fry.

Alas I have sad news. I culled the group this morning. The whole spawn looked great at lights out but this morning a couple were dead and the rest had that zoomie look, half closed fins and wondering aimlessly about the tank. No sure what happened. :(

My only thought Jeff is not rinsing the sponges and any trapped bbs could have soured the water overnight. I did a 90% WC about 9:00pm so went to bed thinking the water was clean.

Not sure the sponge would cause the whole tank to go down all at once? I rinse my sponges out all the time and I am sure something is still trapped inside even as good as I think I get them clean.

Did you have time to do a water check?

That is why it is always good to switch off sponge filters while feeding BBS.

Jeff, not until I return home. I saved a bit of water for testing. I hope it sitting does not hurt the results of the tests.

Could be Mauro.
