Great photos! Thank you both for sharing them with us. I was on facebook the other day and Hudson had posted a bunch of photos of the show. Among the group of photos he posted was of course some of the wilds category both fish collected and entered by himself on behalf of other hobbyist I assume, aswell as photos of other entries including the winner of the wilds category. What makes me bring this up was I was reading some of the comments about the winner of the wilds category and the one comment that really stuck out was from Heiko Bleher who stated that the winner was not a wild fish and was infact a domestic and shoudn't of been in the category ect... I am not going to post any of Hudsons photos without his permission and I have not asked him for permission. So my question to everyone is, if you seen the pictures of the winner of the wilds category what is your take on it. Obviously this is quite a contraversial (sp?) topic and I in no way am trying to stir the pot or ruffle any feathers I am just trying to see what other peoples opinions on the matter are. Simply discus is the only outlet for me on the discussion of this wonderful hobby and therefore I really dont have anyone else to ask about this topic.

Trevor I was one of the judges there. I will not get into any specific debate over a "he said, she said" response but I am aware of the posts on FaceBook. All I will say is rather than make some petulant comment it would have been far better to have approached the organiser in private and voice his concerns there where he would no doubt have been informed that the decision was taken late in the day to open up the Wild Caught category to Wild Type/Wild Form fish in an attempt to promote wild type fish in the hobby. It was too late in the day to have certain things changed (such as the published category names and the engravings on the trophies). In previous shows the wild category attracted very few entries, I think the maximum had been 5, maybe 6. The only other category open to most of the F1 wilds (which were all wild x wild) would have been Open class and they would stand no chance in there.

I would humbly suggest that rather than voice negative, destructive criticisms, people should either say nothing or offer constructive advice or other ways that the hobby can be improved.

Thank you for the response and for clarifying this! Just to be clear I in know way had commented on this and the above mentioned comments were ( as-stated) not my own. I was just mearly trying to open a discussion as to what I had read about this matter. I was not supporting the claims or intents of the original commentor just simply asking about something I had read, in hopes of being enlightened on the subject. I have personally only ever kept domestic discus and I am now wanting to expand my experience as a hobbyist by raising wild caught fish. With that said I am just trying to get a better eye for wilds and I personally could not have seen any difference or signs that this fish was a wild caught or a F1 domestic raised fish. Once again thank you for clarifying this and congrats on a very nice discus show.

Some years ago I acquired some wild caught discus, believe it or not from the original commentator you mention, these were juvenile wilds and when grown out were in fact quite similar to the class winner ... have a look here http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?54215-Canuma-Blues-growth-log&p=390165&viewfull=1#post390165 and here http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?54215-Canuma-Blues-growth-log&p=423937&viewfull=1#post423937 :)

Very nice wilds Paul. Show winners for sure.

Thanks to Pat and Eddie for starting this thread :)

And also thank you Paul for a reasoned and helpful response.

AS you may or may not, be aware I have taken over from Paul at both BIDKA and The British Discus Show (and i need plenty of padding in the shoes :o).

As Paul has helpfully pointed out we any made a decision on what was acceptable in the wild catagory shortly before the show for the reasons stated. It was not a case of fish being misclassified, simply an acceptance of the reality that the wild catagory is not as popular or well supported as it should be. All the fish were close enough to wild types to be classed as such. (if anyone wishes to point a finger I made the decision, and i stand by it, the judges were given leave to mark as they saw fit and i fully support their integrity and ability to judge this matter in a professional manner)

In answer to a the question on classes, we went for 6 classes. My reasons for this are we are a small show in terms of tank numbers, (82 this time) and further breakdown would lead to some classes only having a couple of entries.

■Class 1 - Solid Colour - e.g. Blue Diamond, Marlboro, Cobalt etc.
■Class 2 - Striped - e.g. Turquoise, Snakeskin, Brilliant Turquoise etc.
■Class 3 - Patterned - e.g. - Checkerboard, Pigeon Blood etc.
■Class 4 - Spotted - e.g. Leopard, Leopard Snakeskin, Penang Eruption etc.
■Class 5 - Open - e.g. Albinos, Red Whites etc.
■Class 6 - Wild Caught - e.g. Heckel, Blue, Brown, Green etc

as ever some of the classes are a little ambiguous, but this is unavoidable without many many seperate classes.

Congrats on a great discus show Mike!
I can understand and fully appreciate wanting to draw more people to an often over looked category such as "wild Caught". I feel that this does great things for the show aspect of our hobby and to me it is a very progressive move on your part. As Paul has stated, if someone wanted to enter a wild form fish (wildxwild) they would have to enter the fish in the open-class category which would be at an obvious disadvantage. Therefore in placing this fish in a wild category this fish is amongst competetors in a respected playing field so long as the fish entered was infact a wild type fish (wild x wild). I encourage you to continue with this and am happy that you were brave enough to make this move. The only thing besides maybe some technical aspects of the class that I would change in the future is perhaps re-naming the class from "wild caught" to maybe something like "wild form". I of course also realize that this re-vamping of the class provides its own set of challenges such as where to drawn the line on how far the particular genetics of a wild x wild fish can go for ex: F1-acceptable, F25-not so much. but what do I know ahahaha. Once again thank you for the input and congrats on a great looking show. Wish you guys all the best in your future shows.

thanks for your comments trevor, if we do it this way again it will be changed, personally I would like a wild class with sub catagoried for wild caught & f1... but this is difficult to manage (ie how do you tell f1,f12?), or possibly an "open, wild types" class for tank bred. We will see where things go, we are always trying to do better, encourage more involvement, and will continue to develop as a show and in our methodology.

I like the idea of sub-categories or perhaps even better yet an open wilds class. You are very right and it was something that I was trying to wrap my head around in regards to the how do you tell the F# of the fish question, and if it has ever had any out crossing to domestic hybrids in its past without any obvious characteristics. An open wild form class would be a great idea especially with all the beautiful heckel X fish and domestic bred wilds out there.

No problem Trevor :)

Mike, at the 2012 NADA show there is a home bred class which was quite popular and could be a place for those F1s. :)
