Well since this holiday was extended as us Civil Servants are always over worked...LOL... I decided to finish my prototype acrylic cylinder K1 filter. This cylinder is 18 inches tall by 5 inch dia. Ends caps were made of from a sheet of plexi using the trusty hole-saw and siliconed caps on. I've placed it in my 112g for testing to see how it will seed itself and what modifications are needed.

The only drawback so far....should have gone 4 inch dia. because no one makes affordable 5 inch caps unless you’re willing to spend hundreds on clear schedule 40/80 fitted caps.
The other thing is my plastic air stone blew off when I connected my airline...however still works.

I'm going to make some changes which is why I only assembled this one for now.

Thanks Chad.
I know it may be somewhat over-kill but tried a different alternative to an upside down pop bottle in my tanks.

Great idea Ralph! I love the looks of it and have been thinking of something very similar for sometime and have often wondered why nobody has built something like this and why no companies have caught on to it. It looks like the start of something very promising and I applaude you for taking the initiative and creating this.

I like it...i've always had something like this in mind, just never got around to trying it. I was thinking section off like a 4"space at the end of the tank with drilled acrylic and having an in-tank type sump of K1. About how much did it cost you to make this Ralph?

See you on Sunday buddy....
I have enough cut to put 6 filters together 18" and 12" tall.

Insetead of trying to fabricate some clear end caps why not just use clear nylon screen material on the ends?

what about using something like a bulkhead and drilling holes in a threaded cap so that you can just unscrew it whenever you want only thing would be finding a acrylic tube with the right diameter and you would probably have to modify or cut off part of the bottom threads so K1 didnt get stuck between the bottom sidewall of the bulkhead and the acrylic tube if that makes any sense I had some bulkheads and was looking at them thinking about this. you would be able to cutoff everything below the last threads used by the cap.

Looks great. Where did you get the clear cylinder material from? Have some scrap acrylic. I was going to try to make something similar, just square shaped. But this looks easier. Did you still use suction cups? So, you just cut the silicone, to get to the contents?

I can't speak for Ralph but when I was looking into clear acrylic I found a bunch of local places that carried it in different sizes by just search plastics in the phone book or google. For example I see you live in Kansas City so a quick google search brings up http://www.regalplastic.com/acrylic/cast/tube

Thanks
