I have read a lot of threads on what pump to use - general info on differences in pumps

It is a bit biased opinion i.e. reefer. With regards to cracking the plastic on mag drive, one has to be a total idiot to tighten it so much even if it is metal you will damage the thread. The heating of mag drive isn't really an issue for discus but for reef yes.

We're currently trying to decide on a pump to use on our 55 gallon aging barrel. Since we plan to have a fish room in the new house, we're trying to decide on a pump that can handle 200 to 500 gallons per day, or one to "just get by" with our current setup.

Noise vs flow rate & durability under long term, proper, usage are bigger concerns for us over internal/external heat dissipation or metal vs plastic... although I guess those do factor in for longevity of the product.

Thanks for posting the video & I look forward to an informative discussion of pros vs cons of each.

Your welcome - just a simple video on a couple of pump types - If noise is a concern for you the Iwaki pump is really quiet although not cheap - I had a wayne pump - strong pump but a little to noisy for my application in relationship to the location of my fishroom in the house. Sold that to a friend who just wants it for his basement. I bought a used small Iwaki pump (did not pay much for it) and will play around with it in the fishroom to see if the Iwaki meets my application needs. I do know I want a magnetic drive in-line pump.

I have been using a pump I purchased from my local Harbor Freight tool store (Item #65836). At only $65 and 25 gallons per minute this has been perfect for me to pump water from my aging barrels to the tanks. Lowes wanted $160 for the same machine by a different manufacturer.

Thinking about using this pump to siphon and drain down my tanks - anyone have experience with this pump
I would not use it to fill tanks

It looks like a knock-off Wayne PC 2, which you can get for pretty much the same price.

Bud, I am wondering if this pump can be used inside an aquarium though? It has brass parts so I am not sure it will work in holding tanks.

I had that pump, used it to pump in and pump out... Until it blew sparks and the brushes across my kitchen, never again.

For those of you using the Harbor Freight pump, how do you diffuse the water so it doesn't blow your fish everywhere?

Awesome thanks. My local store had one in stock for $69, so I picked one up. I want to use it in my fish room which only totals about 350 gallons. Eventually I'll use it to fill a 150 show tank in the next room as well.

:bandana: OK, I'm a bit confused. Is this type pump ONLY good for draining your tank or can you use it to fill as well?? http://www.amazon.com/Wayne-PC2-115-Volt-Portable-Water/dp/B000CPZTEK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388291416&sr=8-1&keywords=wayne+pc2+115-volt+340+gph+portable+transfer+water+pump+bronze "T"

Well here we go, my set up is very low tech but it works for me very well. I have seven tanks some of them have fry on them and I have no issues with water current, actually they get under during refills.
