I realize the recommended tank size to grow out of 55. However I do not have the space or funds for a new tank now. I already have 29 tall.

How many 2.5" discus can I really grow out in this 29g.

At what size can I "safely" move them into my planted 120g 4x2x2

getting a 55 is just not an option at the moment.

How many are you talking about at that size?

Depending on how many, you can use the 29 but you might have to do more than one 75% water change per day based on the amount of feedings per day.

I was hoping to do 4-6 fish feeding 4-6 times daily.
I'm fine with 75% changes, just concerned with physical space.

How long could I keep them in the 29? There is no "middle" tank. I would be going straight from the BB 29 to a fully planted 120.

Again, depends on the size - what size of discus are you planning to get ?

You can put 6 in there with daily 100% WC. I did %150 daily with heavy feeding until they were 4" and I move them over to a 75 gallon to finish growing out.

As the title implies, 2.5" discus.

kalelhawj - do you think the discus could finish growing from 4" to adult in a "clean" planted tank (sump filtered).

They can but you have to remember that they will still require plenty of water changes. Your plants may not do well if you are taking out of the water whet they need (ferts and CO2). It can be done, they just won't growout as fast.

Discusloverjeff cover it... If size isn't your concern they will still grow in your planted tank but slow and probably will grow to 5-5.5".

Ok, i'll just do the best I can with what I have. I think I am just more worried about stunting them badly. After finding all the info I could on this specific tank size, it seems 29gal is OK to grow 6 healthy round fish in?

I don't mind 5-6" fish as long as they don't get big eyes and football shape.

If the 29 is all you have then yes, it is fine. Another thing you could try, you can always look on Craigslist and offer a trade possibly for say a 37/38 gal tank. These tanks have a 21" height. I use them for growout tanks myself. I do 90/95% water changes daily and I have 42 almost 2" juvies in them. I also change 5 gals in the morning before work.

Depending on where you live, CL is a good suggestion.
