Hello my name is kevin, and I've been working on my 40 gallon discus tank I have ten neon tetras in there currently. The Ph is at 7.0, and I am wondering how long I should wait to put discus in the tank? The tank hasn't gone through the nitrogen cycle yet. How can I tell my water is ready for them?

Kevin, after you cycle the tank what size discus are you putting in your tank. A 40 is a bit small for a group of six adult discus unless you are thinking a pair. Welcome to Simply.

Yes, get an API test kit. Most LFS carry them. I +2 what Pat said.

Get a bigger tank and more Discus. If you have 4 Juvies in a 40 you will have problems and eventually need a larger tank. The more Discus the better. They do better in larger groups.

I have a 40 gallon I'm cycling right now and I'll be using it to grow out 25 discus 2.5" size. I'll grow them out to at least 4" before I throw them in my main tank.

Wow, that's not going to work for very long unless you are planning to change some serious water daily and have some fantastic filtration. You will not get full potential growth when cramming 25 young discus into a 40 g tank for a long period of time. Consider a much larger tank or numerous tanks. They will quickly outgrow a 40 g and then you will really start to have problems. How about some pictures of your setup? All the feedings and waste will quickly foul the water.

It will be awhile cycling out the 40. The 400 has a 6 week lead time
