You can try using Brute drums from Home Depot.

They are not all food grade. You need to ask the supplier.

I just pick up 3 55g drum for $50. the owner say the drum was used for water.
whats the best way to clean them? Under the drum it do show #2 HDPE which doesnt mean nothing if the drum was used for something else.
Im thinking of just cutting the top off for better cleaning.

I too have a 55 gallon plastic barrel and would like to know how to clean it. I need to clean mine by Monday as I'll receive my new discus on Tuesday. Hopefully someone can chime in and help. I was thinking bleach, but don't know the ratio.

Before use I fill them with water and bleach an let them sit overnight, the next day they I use a pressure washer. No issues at all, I hope this helps.

Thank you, I'll try that. Did you place air stones inside to get water movement?

My drums are also HDPE (High Density Polyethylene).

I clean my two drums once every 6 weeks. I use Baby Sterilising tablets & leave the tablets in there for 1 day, then rinse 3 times making each rinse take 1 day. During sterilising & rinsing, I run my pump so that the hose is also sterilised & rinsed.

What are baby sterilizing tablets?

Blue?

The blue 55G barrels, I remember reading a thread where a member used a blue barrel and lost all his fish. Something with a chemical from the blue coloring contaminating the water........

All my 55gal barrels are blue, have been using them for years with no issues. As long they food grade you should be fine.

I have always used them too but was shocked to see they have gone up quite a bit in price.
