Was at lfs (living reef orlando) to get a neo therm heater for QT tank. I asked the guy if he had anything cool/rare and he showed me the PEPPERMINT ANGELFISH they sold for $25,000. It has been purchased and they are waiting for the guy to pick it up. There is only two (correct me if I'm wrong) of these in the world and I thought it was cool to see one in person. Beautiful fish.
And I thought discus were expensive...

Who, in their right mind, would pay that kind of money for a fish?

They live at 300 feet and require cooler water than the average reef tank.
I got mine for less than $15...

Ppl with lots of money. Most of the most expensive fish are sold to japan. Heard even discus, japan gets the best and us kinda get the leftover. Same for saltwater

Anyone one heard of a gem tang? Not as rare just $$. they had three gem tangs $2500 a pop. Not anywhere as bad as peppermint angelfish but still not cheap

Some of my friends in reef had gem tangs.
The most expensive fish i ever kept was rhinopias scorpionfish. It was about $1000.

That's like a race horse. Insurance companies sell insurance to cover the animal.

I have had plastic fish in my tank. They never hide, they do not dirty the tank, they do not bother the other fish and they do not eat much. I did notice that whatever my water conditions were they never breed!

The peppermint angels are awesome. I hope one day they become prolific enough and breed in captivity and common enough in the trade for their price to come down. Right now they are one of the rarest fish in the trade.

Ok, we cannot let saltwater folks think they are all that!
we need the breeder folks on here to start making the Peppermint discus!
I looked at the pics and watched the video,no doubt he is cool lil guy.
But seriously 25grand for a fish? wew i gotta pass.

saltwater ppl already think they are ALL THAT. but coming from reef myself, I dig discus better...

its not about how peppermint looks. its about how hard is it to catch em. divers risk their life to get em.

And people whine about paying $85 for a 5" or gaff at paying $250 for jumbo. Lol

Someone had to be the first to own. They needed to know how much someone would be willing to pay. Maybe in 10 years I will be able to afford one for my reef.

I don't think I'd ever get a fish that expensive...would be afraid to kill it..and afraid of taking vacations..let's hope the guy who bought it knows what a water change is lol

Thats a good looking fish, but IMO can't hold a candle to coral beauty, lemonpeel or flame angels.

I would think the pressure is different at 300 feet. I wonder how you would go about replicating that? hmmm , and if not how healthy is it for that fish? I couldnt even imagine the stress if that guy started to get sick. I would lose my mind!
