I have 6 juvi discus about 4" tall and they all have a slight triangular shape their eyes are not too large for their body worried i may have bought a bunch of stunted fish , do they take on the nice round shape as they grow?

Depending on the change...young fish will often round out as they mature.

Not sure if this will work but they are exactly the same shape as the first fish on this page http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile14.html

I don't want this to sound wrong. I often get labled as a jerk because I believe in being straight forward. My opinion from seeing the tank is it really does not matter what discus you put in there they are never going to thrive. They are never going to grow right. Many of us here started the same way to realize that it just does not work well.

Goos luck.

It is very hard to raise young fish in a planted tank. Then you add angels to the mix. Your odds go way down. It is just to hard to keep the water clean. Nornally everything goes great for a couple of months and then the crash happens. Even if the crash is avoided the fish tend to be stunted and small. Most owners will tell you how they are 6+ inches and grown out in a planted tank put when you put a tank measure on them they almost always measure 4 1/2 to 5 inches.

Good luck.

I dont understand this crash that i have heard , it could only come with slackening off with water changes ?, which would cause the crash in a bare bottom un planted tank anyway . I definitely started with bad fish i plan to get some better fish and do a discus only tank with no decor.

The crash happens from all the food, poop etc that collects on the gravel. If you removed the gravel you would be amazed at the amount of stuff that comes out of it. Time to read; please consider starting with the stickies in the beginner sections.

I think i will start sucking gravel out on my WCs and just keep the anubius and floating plants. i have had BB tanks before i will have to rethink my filtration because the fx6 will cause too much current for them

I have an aquaclear 110 which if turned all the way has a flow rate of 500 gallons per hour. Mine do just find with it. Fill the water up as far as you can without risk of spilling or anything and theyll do fine. The only one that gets thrown around is the runt which is still at 2.5 inches the rest are much larger. And he doesnt mind he loves the current and even plays in it.

I didn't get to the point of the crash but believe me when I say that the above advice should be taken.

We pulled everything from our 55 gal recently and were amazed at how dirty the gravel was. We were doing water changes just about every day and vacuuming the gravel. We thought the tank was clean until some of our discus started getting small fuzzy white pimple-like spots on them. Out came the tetras, corys, driftwood, plants and gravel and now the tank is healthier. 50% WC everyday and vacuum. The discus are much happier and seem to be noticably growing.

One mistake we did make was not putting up a background on the back and sides though. When the discus got spooked they would bounce off the glass. We quickly covered the back and sides and that no longer happens.

For growouts, BB with lots of food and daily WC really is the way to go. Trust the experts here, not the dude at the local fish store.

I just started sucking the gravel out today should be all gone in 3 x 50% water changes over the next few days i will pot my 4 amazon swords and keep the 2 anubius plants and the small bits of wood they are attached too also will ditch the angels getting to learn discus is a sharp curve or an expensive shallow curve will keep my little l168 plec 8 black neons and corys
