You get mixed answers about carbon I have used it in my sump before and my fish didn't die or get hole in head like others have said. I switch off between the carbon and poly fiber stuff though.

I haven't used carbon in the last two years unless I have to treat the aquarium, then I only use carbon to remove the medication.

I removed my carbon when the bag got a hole in it. I never replaced it and the tank has done fine.

Activated carbon or carbon pads are is a waste of your money. As long as you do regular WC, you don't need it. Good to have some on hand though just in case to remove medications.

So if you are running a canister should you just use that tray for some more bio media? I am assuming the more the better?
