Hi just wondering if there is any way for a novice to tell the difference between the 2 is it shape or is it due to the color strains developed by the different breeders.? I bought a what was labeled as a stendker fire red today and it seems rounder than my others but really i have no idea what i bought .

Looks like a red melon possibly. Go to discus Hans website to see pics of his fire reds. Good quality discus should be round regardless if they are asian bred or from stendker.

Many Stendekers are pigeon based and may show peppering. Many Asian strains come in albino that will not show peppering. You will also find some variation in color strains between Asian and stendeker.

One good way to compare is to look at Kenny's November shipment on his sponsor site and go to Hans website to view.

Keep in mind if you buy young pigeon bloods many will pepper. If you buy adults that are clean, they might not pepper.

Stendker is a family run Wholesaler of discus fish in Germany..

Asia is the largest Continent..

so comparing all the Discus Breeders in Asia to one breeder in Germany is probably not a fair comparison..

As far as I know Stendker has 21 Different strains. Only 7 of them are Pigeon strains.

Sure doesn't look to be a Stendker Fire red to me either. Any better pics?

Also Stendkers are specialized in their own strains. Stendkers don't have albinos, eruptions, high body, bull dog and so on. Oh yea, its comparing family run business vs a continent business :)

OC Discus, its pretty strong comment to say many PB will pepper. As discussed many times in SD, its based on environment, care and so many factors for peppering. :)

You shouldn't make statements like this unless you are sure of what you are saying. This statement is completely false. Most Stendker Discus are not Pigeon based.

Sorry. The one in question is pigeon based. I have one just like it. And though they may not pepper in an experts tank, they likely will in a beginners tank. He deserves to know the difference. He asked.

Its like saying only caucasian people have freckles which is not true, you get them in all nationalities. The more I go in the sun the more my freckles are pronounced. The darker the background the more your pigeon based fish will pepper REGARDLESS OF WHAT COUNTRY THEY COME FROM………….Josie

Thanks Skip. I thought might quote made it pretty clear which part of his statement I was saying was false but I guess not.

He deserves to know the difference?? The op never actually asked about peppering. His question was directly about how to tell Stendker from Asian discus. Peppering doesn't come into play with this question at all. But there isn't a difference............Stendker pigeon discus will not pepper any more than Asian pigeon discus and in some cases they will be less likely to pepper due to great genetics.

and back to the ? no one can tell by looking and be 100% that its one or the other.one funny thing is the asian breeders selling german discus lol

To me, many discus look the same no matter if they are german, asian, hispanic, caucasian, etc. Names are different but colors will be similar. There are so many discus and breeders out there that it would be hard to determine from looking at a fish. As they get older, it seems to me that German discus get bulky and grow larger into the 8-9" range.

You can't tell the different, but i'm sure others can

here is a picture i snapped this morning
to be honest i am not too worried about the colour , i have never seen a discus strain wild or man made i didnt love i bought this one for the shape and size he is about 6-7" high , So it would be safe to say that the Stendker and the Asian forms have no shape difference ? it is more the colour strains that differentiate ?http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/basswizard/IMG_4498.jpg (http://s853.photobucket.com/user/basswizard/media/IMG_4498.jpg.html)

Ok melon.. here.. very broad brush statement that u are waiting to hear.
No scientific fact.. just some ideas I have read..

Stendker have genetics to grow larger than asian. not many albino or spotted

Asians have more spotted and albinos fish then stendker.. not as large

As a rule of thumb, stendkers have a slightly different "look" to thier shape.

Thanks that makes sense from the research i have been doing today of course there are accessions just to stop anyone arguing with your info. I watched an interview with mr stendker on you tube and he claims they have bred them for hardiness as well as far as parameters go .
