Which of the two would be the best size to grow and keep discus? The 40 though shorter by a foot, is deeper by 5 inches. If the discus get to 5" or bigger, is the length more important than depth? The tank will be bb.

I think it depends on the size and quantity you are growing out. I personally would use the 55. That is what I have. I use a 37 gal tank until they reach about 1 1/2" and then move them into the 55. The 55 is higher and longer. Thats always a good thing.

Use the biggest tank you can get. I normally use a 75 for grow outs.

John, is this for a large batch of fry, or smaller batch buys? I was thinking 10, 2.5's - 3's would be lost in a 75.
I ask because I am pondering the same thing right now. I bought a 40b, then a 55, and am now thinking about picking up a 75 for my sump. After getting the 40b home, it just seems WAY to small to use as a sump for a 240g aquarium. So, I picked up a 55 for the sump build. The $ a gallon deal at Petco had me on a feeding frenzy. I am now thinking, what the hell, space is not a problem since the sump will be plumbed through a wall, why not over filter and go with a 75 sump and use the 55 for grow out and the 40b for QT?

It is almost mandatory for big spawns and I would also use it for smaller groups. I know some people will tell you that smaller fish will get lost in a big tank but I kind of say BS to that. Anyone checked the size of the Amazon lately? Personally I would not hesitate to use a 75 for any fry that is over an 1 1/2. When I am growing out fish for myself I like to take 10-12 2 inch fish and put them in a 75. As they grow I will cull the group or split them into 2 tanks.
