So far, all get along very well. The juvies eat everything and run the tank. They eat as food drops, but they also wait for it to fall under the manzanita wood and plants. Gonna attempt to make my own food. Been reading the sticky "food recipes". I love their behavior. I've kept pretty much everything over the years. Only had these guys a very short time and have really noticed they rely on each other and they are starting to react as I walk to the tank.

Looks nice, are you going to be making beef heart? Make sure to give them a veried diet other than beef heart.

I intend to do a beef heart mix, omega one veggie flakes and pellets, frozen blood worms, and maybe some Mysis. Anything I should avoid or add to that? I did find the beef heart next door to my job. They closed so never asked if they can clean it for me.

If you can find some one to clean the beef heart for you, do it! It will save you a lot of time.

I like the setup of the tank, good luck with little ones.
Please be aware that the clown botia are very tricky, in daylight the are very calm buy at night swim all over and can butcher the fish especially the small ones. One good thing about them the are excellent cleaners of left overs.

I just made my first batch of beefheart meal for the fellas. Uhm, I had to clean it myself...a bit gross. Anyway, cleaned it, chooped it into blocks. Added along with spinach, paprika, fish oil vitamins (punctured capsule), Omega One veggie pellets, bloodworms, shrimp, garlic, and dissolved multivitamins. Flattened it in a freezer bag and froze it. I am hoping these guys are gonna dig it.

Also it is perfectly fine to only feed a good BH mix. A good mix has everything thay need in it and I have raised several generations on nothing but BH. Having said that it can be hard to keep the water quality up in a planted tank. BH will probably make that worse. That is why I seldom suggest raising discus out in a planted tank. In the long run your fish will suffer.

Good luck.

Not quite sure if 6 Vals in a 110g is considered planted.
However, thank you for the advice. I am still trying to figure out how much to feed at each feeding as to not disturb my parameters. Im very regimented in my WC routines as well as my parametric monitoring. Have had the same routine for well over 10 years, it's part of why I love this hobby. However, if I do notice some problems due to the batch, I will consider different recipes as you suggested plain BH. Keeping my fingers crossed that they are not suffering.....

New PB. I am new to these guys and find it very cool how they all socialize together despite the strain.

Its the substrate that causes the problem and not the planets themselves.

The juvie in the first pic was sick when I got him and I am not sure if he's recovering. He is eating and active, but he is not very attractive.

John, '
When I do WC's I am very particular to vacuum the sand. What in the substrate causes problems? I am asking because I found my substrate to be beneficial to the tanks past inhabitants. I am not familiar with the impact on discus. The group of cories and loaches do a fantastic job at cleaning the substrate.

First I want to say that it can be used. it just makes it harder on you. The number one thing that discus( especially juveniles ) need is clean water. To grow them out to their full potential you need to feed heavy. This will produce lots of wastes from the fish and lots of uneaten food. It is very easy for the substrate to cover/hide this. It is all about the water quality.

Ok, I get it. That's why I prefer sand as opposed to gravel. I watch the uneaten food go to the loaches and they do aid in cleaning the bottom, they eat everything in the crevices. I removed the Vals because their roots were trapping food. Thanks for clarifying.

Here's a recent vid. Sorry for the terrible vid. They are really becoming much more social and losing their shyness. Starting to fight a bit...looks like a pecking order is being created. I've noticed that in my recent species I've kept, but not like these guys. Definitely becoming attached to these guys and the water changes.

That is a beautiful tank (and Discus), I'm super envious! John_Nicholson, thanks for the info across several threads about planted vs. bare for raising Discus. I'm setting up a bare tank to grow my first little ones.

Wow! Beautiful tank. Great to hear the pros and cons about planted vs bare bottom. I'm new also and still doing research, but I'm leaning towards a planted tank also, but with adult discus.

I think its a marble red as well. It was sold as a generic fire red. Nick, of the four orange ones. One is a pigeon blood, marble red, and the smaller oranges are melons? They are peppered but are losing theyre spots.

After about a month. How are things coming along? So far all are very healthy and eating a ton. In fact, they are growing as well. The Lemons are pairing off and doin the dance. The turq's are really brightening up. I'm feeding 4-5 times a day as suggested. Feeding Al's blackworms, Hans flakes, Colorbits, and homemade BH mix. Oh yea...and bworms to stir up the tank. I am doing WC's every 2-3 days also as suggested. I never added Prime before, but after reading your sticky on Prime I have since started using after every WC. I am very pleased with the stocking. Do you have any suggestions or ideas in regards to my set up? (Other than removing the sand)

Loving your thread and updates! I love clowns and your lemons are looking great. I think with all the inhabitants you might want to consider doing more frequent water changes until your juvies get bigger. I'm a discus novice, but I do 80% daily. Also couldn't really tell if you have pre-filters, but I would look into it for your canisters if you don't. I have a pre-filter on my AC110. I clean out the pre-filter daily, and I'm always surprised by how much gunk it picks up. I think it's a lot easier to clean the pre-filter, then opening up the canister to clean filter floss.

Good idea with the prefilter. I can do some research...I have 3 large canisters filtering it. Thanks for the props. I actually do more frequent changes, for the most part every other day. However, I like to say every 3rd because there are days where I just cant get to it. I used to do 50-60% water changes but the large WC's were killing the Roselines and Rams. They are super sensitive to water hardness changes. So, I found that 40-50% was what kept the others healthy.

Just an update after my last post 9 months ago. I have truelumen Pro LED's on there now. I have ordered the diamond white light to add more broad spectrum white light. The Uaru and parrots are gone this week. Sad to see Uaru go, but he needs a lil larger home. Parrots, well you know.
