Alright, I've looked every where (here, youtube, other forums) but how in the heck do you prime a pvc overflow (without air lift pump)? I've been sucking (both figuratively and literally). So then I looked further into it and saw that on some examples the end cap on the tallest portion of pvc has a drilled hole while other people have a cap without it. I've got both (so I can switch it up)... so which one of those do I use and how the heck do I prime this thing? For an example, mine is basically the same as this one (first picture in this other forum): http://www.dendroboard.com/forum/parts-construction/87136-will-pvc-overflow-work-low-water-level.html

I have the same type of overflow on my tank, to get it primed the first time, I removed the end cap and poured a cup of water down that tube, while sucking on the airline(one with the check valve), make sure your return pump is running to start the overflow.

thanks farebox! didn't think about that. i'll give that a shot. meanwhile (while trying to keep a straight face asking this), how much sucking did you have to do? I've been sucking the hell out of this thing (yep, I have the one-way air valve correct... just in case anyone was wondering)

I was just like you, sucking the hell out of it and getting mouth full of tank water. removed the end cap, turn return pump on, pour water down the tube and sucked until the siphon started up. Also got water in the mouth. Good luck.....

farebox (and anyone else!), I have continued to fail at getting this thing primed! about to give up. I've even tried putting a hose in it and getting a pump to blast water through it. what am I doing wrong? only thing left I can think of is maybe the hole I drilled for the one-way air valve may not be flush (pretty sure it's fine... nice perfect hole that fits snug... but I'm all out of ideas on what I'm doing wrong).

Is the unit glued? Must be air tight. What I did was made the hole just the size could fit the airline tubing and this attach the check valve to the tubing, Also two of pipes must be the same lengths. Go back and review the uarujoey/utube...I had to make another one because of this.
