Today while cleaning my Jbl canister after 6 months I noticed some few brown mulms on the white filtration media balls in each 3 of the trays. I just poured some aquarium tank water and these deposits which looked like dirty brown mulms drained away through the holes beneath the tray. My question is were these beneficial bacteria or just dirty deposits?

It was just dirt. I would recommend rinsing your canister filter more frequently than every 6 months. I rinse my canister media once every two weeks or so - but once a month is what I see most people here doing.

Adam is right; cleaning your filters are just as important as water changes. Take your trays out, give a good rinse in a bucket of aquarium water, put them back. I do this every 2 weeks. You would be surprised how fast dirt accumulates in a discus tank.

I rinse once a months, or once in two months the most. Six months imo is too much.
