After a few months of being a noob, all my juveniles 2" discus have survived and grown to 5" to 6" sub-adults.

Here's my psuedo planted tank.
There is no soil in most of the tank. The 2 pots of crypts are planted in bonsai pots, and hidden behind rocks and covered with gravel, as with a pot of tiger lotus. Some Java ferns mounted on woods.
Water change is 3 times 80% a week. The prefilter sponge are washed weekly.

Discus are fed only beefheart, and there is a large cleanup crew of cories eating any leftovers.
There are also quite a few ramhorn snails eating any leftovers, and their population is kept in check by a group of assassin snails.
The cories colonies hides in all the driftwoods, and comes out mainly at night.
The pea size gravel are easy to vacuum, but have turn from white to slightly greenish due to algae.

The plants and driftwoods makes the discus feel comfortable, so they don't dash around. A small group of cardinal tetras also acts as dither fishes.

Despite reading up on most of the articles in SD forum, there is still much to learn.
Thank you everybody for the help you have given.

Did it really only take a few months to grow out that big?

It's a Tiger Lily

That yellow discus is really nice. Is it a gold millenium or yellow marlboro? Wouldn't mind having a couple of those in my tank...

Love the scape! Do you supplement the soil with iron to keep the tiger lily red? And you discus look so happy!

Strangely, it does not pepper at all. I posted some picture here:

Just add root tabs into the bonsai pot every few months. Really easy to maintain. Crypts are quite neat when they grow out, and the cories can lay eggs on their leaves, and the little ones can hide there. I don't really dose iron, but i added an iron nail into the bonsai pot.

I think as long as the fish are well fed, has good water, have good resting places, they will be happy.

Yeah. Got this from another fish forum. It's a really cheap, long lasting idea.
