There are 3 colors in discus fish, solid colors, mildly patterned and thirdly strongly patterened. In a huge display tank which colours of discus fish would be great with contrasting colors whether solids if so which colors,if mild patterned which strains and if strongly patterened which strains

I think that's a pretty subjective question. The short answer is whatever you like best!

Two more cents: for me, from a distance, the big bold solids of different colors are stunning. The closer you get the more you get to appreciate the beauty of the patterned ones.

I really like one species only tanks. Like all blue diamonds or red turqs etc.

A combination or variety does it for me. It's eye catching!! "T"

It comes down to personal taste primarily but you can decide on which might look better in your setup by a few factors... Well, in my opinion.
If the primary focus of the tank are only the discus like in a bare bottom tank or a simple tank etc with no other fish, then a mix of different strains will look good.
If you have a biotope kind of setup or a planted aquascape, a single Discus strain variety will look better than a mix. Discus are beautiful fish and their looks easily overpowers anything else in the tank. If you have a mix of many strains in such a setup, it might be distracting. It will overpower the setup and the discus will draw all your attention.
Wilds look amazing in a black water type biotope setup.
Many Discus strains like pigeons, etc will start to pepper in setups with black backgrounds and dark substrates. So if you have such a setup you can choose from strains which don't show any peppering like blue diamonds, turquoise etc.
Solid color strains won't show stress bars.
I prefer a school of a single strain of Discus.
I have 21 blue diamonds in my 600 gallon low tech.

I have 12000K lights. A bit towards the blue spectrum... blue coloured fish will look better.

I agree that a biotope with a single strain of wilds is awesome.

The first one looks like a blue cobalt, and the second one like a red turquoise. Both are very stunted.

Planted tanks and pigeons you could get peppering more but pigeons have come a long ways in the last while! A lot cleaner and more intense.
That big tank of all bds is beautiful! Two strain tanks are also nice. Blues and golds look great.

Thanks for the tank thread, very interesting reading. Puts out little 120 Gallon starter to shame! Was wondering what you did for cleaning the bottom, but the filter sump description helps explain that.
