My NOT So Little Growout Project

[Second Hand Pat]

Some of you may know that I received four Altum Flora Christmas week. I placed them in a 40 breeder with daily 90% or better and all the food they could eat. They started out very shy being such a small group and this has continued up until this past week. I sort of figured that as they grew they would become braver and this seems to be happening. All four have grown a full half inch or better since I received them and yes, I verified this with a ruler. So to date three are at four inches or better and one is just over four and a half inches.

They eat everything I give them and they eat small portions throughout the day. I was finally able to get pictures without they running for the hills.

Great pictures Pat, Kenny's fish grow like mad, and I really mean they grow. My little guys grow about 1/2 an inch a week. Your guys are going to be very pretty.

I measured these guys last night. The three larger ones are firmly over 5 inches now and the smallest one is firmly over 4.5 inches. I have noticed that they are not eating as much and the pushing behaviors are bad (expected) and seems to less spawning behavior (good). A larger tank would be a good thing at this point.

Did a quick measurement during the WC. The three at five inches finally broke the five inch stalemate. They are now at five and a quarter. The smaller one is still at 4.5 :( but on a happy note they are only nine months old. I need to remember to not get to greedy.

Here's a video of the AFs. They are in a tank with four wild young Tefes. I tried to focus the video on the AF and avoid the Tefes but it was not easy. You will see two of the AFs have paired up. They did have dark eggs on their second spawn and the eggs were gone the next morning. If you look the female actually does have a halo. Three of the AFs are good sized and the smaller one is still growing. They are 11 months old.

Pat Pat, I just set up a new tank. 125g right next to my old 125g. It has a blue background and because don't have any blue discus other than three big blue diamonds I thought I wanted to try something striated and now I know what kind. I will contact Kenny and see if the Altum Floras are coming soon. They are very beautiful and you've done a superb job growing them out. Congratulations. Rufus

Well, that is okay. Most schools love that kind of donation. They are so appreciative. How much would the new pump be? Local schools need so much and have so little. Anyway. My fish today seem to be on an eating frenzy. I have no idea why? FDBW's are their favorite and tomorrow the big tank gets Han's meat mix. They get like sharks in a feeding frenzy. Water change six tanks. I love doing it because the discus love it. Takes me away from my work.

I don't think it would be impossible to pick it up. I have donated books to my local library and I couldn't take the twelve boxes to them so they had a volunteer pick them up in his truck. You should speak either to the school principal or a teacher in the biology and/or science section and I think you will be surprised at how much a school would enjoy the project of keeping some aquatic creature or creatures as a school project. They would need help setting it up but that would be so rewarding to help them out and perhaps give a talk on what a biological filter is! Rufus

Sent from my Galaxy Note 3 Judi, I know, I know, I know!!!!!! I am going to pick them up on the 20th of August. Driving there to Orlando from Miami. Taking in Harry Potter and Disney as well so it will be on my way home that I pick up these beauties. They will have a great home here. There is a 55 gallon already cycled for them and waiting. Pat and I have been a great communication about this and of course she is someone I greatly admire so I am very flattered that she would let me have these wonderful fish. Rufus

Next time the hb and I are in Orlando I'd love to meet the both of you and your fish! We're actually planning on buying a condo in the Orlando area, hb wants to work for Disney's horticultural dept when we retire. Last time we were there we did the dolphin swim at discovery cove (amazing) and while we were snorkeling in the grand reef all I could think of was getting the opportunity to see their filtration set up!

Rufus stopped by and picked up the AFs. He said they made the trip fine and the pair are already bowing at each other and they are all eating. Rufus was a very funny and kind person. I'm glad he decided to take them.

Judi, Rufus really does care for his discus and that makes me feel very comfortable sending them home with him.

Pat has been the best about me taking these Altums Floras from her. They are already eating and very active. I will post pics shortly. They are more beautiful than I imagined! With the love and care they have received at Pat's it is no wonder!
