Yup, but the plan for this tank was already in place when I started looking for it.

You got yourself a new Christmas tree? :D

LOL, that is actually about 150 lbs of base rock that I will advertise through the local reef club forum here to off set the cost of the tank.

Dang Pat. I really thought you would be the first to come up with the correct tank size, after all you were part of the inspiration of this tank. Guess again. You really should know.

Larry, I was so busy looking at the width I missed the height. You will love it. Are you doing wilds in it? If so this might be just the ticket for a little wilds. :D I have a pair in the 230 who are in a spawning mode and I swear the whole tank is juiced up.

Yes, it's a 220. Now what I want to know is.............you are not a very tall woman. How the heck do you clean the bottom of the tank. I'm a little worried about it.

Yes, it is thin enough that he actually rolls it up to ship and you can put it in the tank without cutting it. He sends some clips with it to attach it to the tank but I chose to silicone it to the back.

I don't really like sumps but with a tank this size I think it is the way to go. Since I am a proponent of big water changes I really don't need anything too elaborate. I'm using a 20 gallon with some poret and bio balls. Pat knows there is only one thing I would put in a tank this size. Yes it is Wilds. I've struggled and failed miserably to get wilds to breed but here I go again. I have 7 in QT being treated right now. I actually bought them before I found the tank. They came from John (Snookn21). 5 Cuipeua super red and 2 Alenquer red. I saw on John's website that he had these coming in before he posted them here. Originally he had them as large. When they arrived at his place he changed them to XLarge. These guys are huge. The largest 2 are over 7" (Yes measured with a tape). They are doing great but have a couple more rounds of meds and qt before they go in the new tank. The first to go in the tank will arrive Wednesday. I was lucky enough to see Mark's (Discus Origins) sale post right when he posted and jumped on the 4 Trombeta red he had left. Since these have been in Mark's tanks for some time I won't be treating them and they will go straight in the big tank. They will get the big tank all to themselves until the others come out of qt.

Who did you order from and what are you getting? I've read some of your other post and knew you were wanting wilds. Keep talking with Pat. She will help you get settled with them I'm sure.

Larry, not to discourage you, because the manzanita does look good, but it's a bugger t keep clean. It grows that white fluffy stuff that you have to constantly clean. I go through stages with mine where I get so frustrated and sick of cleaning it off that I take it out. Then after a few months I miss it and put it back only to repeat the cycle.

I completely understand and agree. This wood is not new. It has been in all my wild tanks in the past. I still have manzanita in both my 125's but they are discus free. It does get to be a pain dragging it out and pressure washing it on a regular basis but it also looks so really good and gives the wilds some structure I think they need.

Larry, is that rocky sheet background flat on the back or is it contoured with the pattern?

It is not entirely flat. Seemed to be contoured with the front but didn't seem as much. Seems like I remember that they use some kind of rock in the paint which might make the front a little more. It was flat enough that I had no problem with the silicone adhering. Keep in mind that this background is not very thick to begin with.

It's been so long since I did it on driftwood I don't remember. I do recall it cleaned up the wood really well.

That's why I tried the PP Len. I have to admit though I didn't use any fish treatment level of PP. I stuck the piece of driftwood in an empty tank and poured PP crystals into the tank as it was filling. No idea what the concentration was, but if I remember right I could hardly see the wood if I could see it at all. I figured I had to do something with all the extra PP crystal I bought. The only way I could find PP was in a jug about that was about gallon size.

That's pretty much what I did too Keith, except I used the bathtub overnight. Bad idea btw, it makes a mess of the tub.

Keith Perkins
02-17-2014, 09:18 AM
That's interesting Len, I wonder if that means whatever is growing on the manzanita is originating in the water and not the wood.

You put PP in your bathtub? Are you single or just looking to be?

I made the decision to get back into wilds back in December. John (Snookn21) had what appeared to be some very nice Manacapuru Blue XL for $65 each so I ordered 4 of them along with a couple of Medium Royal Blues. While they were being treated in QT, I found out John was getting the Cuipeua Super Reds. I went ahead and ordered the Reds with the intent of selling the Blues. I actually have a potential buyer lined up for the Blues but they are now looking amazing. The Reds were treated in QT for 4 weeks and I decided to go ahead and put both the Blues and the Reds in the 220. I ordered some bigger pieces of manzanita from PC1 which should arrive in the next week or so. The new pieces are tall enough to go from the top of the tank to the bottom. The sump is now set except for some K1 coming from Josie and some 200 Micron socks that should be here on Friday. So here are the Blues and Reds from John in the 220.

Thanks Pat, they really have settled in nicely. I'm very encouraged with the amount of red that is already showing up on them. In the right light there is a lot of red on some of them. There are still a couple of the blues in the tank and I have a couple of the reds in a 125, lol. I didn't do a very good job of telling them apart when I pulled them. This weekend I will have to pull the wood and swap them back correctly. The red wigglers are working out great. When I first drop them in they can't seem to eat them whole but when I come back to the tank an hour or two later they are all gone. I appreciate you help with them. Now I just have to figure out where to keep the bin during the summer. It gets pretty hot in the basement.

The worms are fairly new for me so I can't really say how often yet. Someone like Pat that has been keeping red wigglers for a while can probably answer that better. If I can feed them daily without depleting the stock then that is what I would like to do.

Keeping sand clean really isn't that hard. Sometimes when I vac a tank with sand I will just skim the surface but other times I will let the vac suck the sand up into the tube. If you hold it at just the right height it will sift around inside the tube without sucking all the way out. Then I pull the tube up higher and let the sand fall out and put it back and fill it up again.

Second Hand Pat
03-12-2014, 10:52 PM
OC, the trick with the red wigglers is to have the colony be self sustaining. You harvest the smaller worms and leave the adults as your breeding stock. So your colony size is based on how you feed and harvest the worms. I have been feeding more worms to the fish but not feeding the worms enough so I will need to slack off a little on the harvesting so the worms can catch up.

Thanks Eric. This has been fun and this time around with Wllds has been evolving and changing (GROWING) since I first made the decision to give them another shot at breeding. I started out thinking I would get one group of wilds for the 220 and work with them. I have two 125's that I have not been using for discus. Well, I'm now relocating the fish from those two tanks so they will be available for wilds. I have a group of 6 Heckels coming in from John on Tuesday. Like I said it is a plan in progress but now I'm thinking I would like to work on some wild/wild and wild/domestic crosses (that is where the heckels come in). Since I'm only working 6 1/2 hours a day now, I have more time than I had in the past to put into this which makes a huge difference.

It would be great if you could make it down here sometime and I would enjoy getting up there at some point. You should consider coming to Austin in June!!

Nice Larry, which heckels are you getting from John? With the recent spawning activity I have in the big tank it appears I have two males in my heckel group.

I have been making cuts in the 220. The plan has been to get down to 10 to 12 for the final number. I am down to the final 6 from my current group of wilds. I will add the new guys I have ordered from Mark and that will get me to my magic spot. I am really pleased with how these guys have been settling. They are starting to show some great color and their shape is pretty decent.
