I just wanted to say I glad that I found this place, I always wanted to have discus and all I heard was that they were hard to care for. I have been in keeping saltwater fish for 12years now and I always wanted to have a discus tank ever since I have seen a picture of a discus. So I thought I would give it a try, I have been reading up on discus fish for sometime now and I had set up my new tank for that purpose to keep discus healthy and to keep them for a long time. I just got 3 discus in and I really like them a lot almost as much as my saltwater fish. So I hope I can learn a lot from others on here so that I can be successful in keeping them for a long time. Thank you for having a place that I can come to learn from others that are into discus fish.

What size is your tank, redman ?
Keeping just 2, 3, or 4 discus is not generally recommended, as discus are very social fish and do best in groups of at least 5 or more. Keeping just 3 MAY lead to bullying/pecking order issues over time, so keep an eye on them, and consider adding another 2 or 3 sometime soon, assuming your tank is large enough to properly accommodate that number.
Best of luck to you, and welcome to sd.

Where did you get them from if you don't mind me asking? I have my suspicions and I hope it's not the supplier I think it is. And welcome by the way.

Welcome redman.

LOL....Just like sholvey, I was thinking of that place he'd named. Only seen those names on that site when I was looking around online. Well, gald you're having good luck with them so far. But please do some more reading about that place here. Then look at the sponsors here when you're ready for some more discus. You might find the dif. is night and day on overall conditions. Good luck:)

When I first started discus several years back, I thought it may be a great place to get discus. Simply because, the price was cheap and the pics they advertised, looked like they were an awesome breed. Well, knowing what I know now, they are all sub par fish and I will never ever buy from them again. The fish were stunted and never had a chance. I didn't know it back then. But, after I understood the discus hobby, they were bad fish that never made it past 3.5 in. I hope that's not the case for you. Once you get past 11 posts, I would like to see a pick of them. And again welcome.

Redman, look through the photo's in this thread...http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?112068-PREVIEW-FEB-2014-Forrest-shipment-arriving-soon Note the shape, color and eye and compare to your little guys.

The pigeon looks a little stunted. Hard to tell with the 2 turqs. If you want to get them to a 5+ inch I suggest putting them in a B2B tank until they get past 5inch. The little guys you got need a lot of clean water and 4-5 heavy feedings a day. If you are content with that size, that is fine too. Afterall, they are your babies. Lol They don't look too bad though. Good luck.

Sholvey I read that thread you posted about somethingsphishy and that was wrong what they did. I did not receive my fish in a jar they came in plastic bags like you get from the aquarium store. I hope that my fish are not like the ones that those people had problems with. Like you I saw the price and I took a chance, right now for me they are doing really good I guess only time will tell. I hope I am the lucky one thanks again for letting me know.

Redman, I know a simple thing to tell your wife so she will allow a larger tank just say, "Well butchered you will feed me and my fish for a month." I just hope she does not reply with those three words that will get her whatever she wants, "Subpoena, divorce, alimony." Just kidding! Please keep in mind SD sponsors for your next purchase. You will do better. I also suggest you visit a sponsor if one is close to you.

Well sad news I had to sell my 120 that I was going to set up for my discus. I did redo my 40g and I like the way it looks, I unfortunately lost 3 of my discus but 2 of them are still doing good. I will post pictures as soon as I take them of the tank and the way it looks now.

The fish were in better condition then than now.you have sadly lost some but its like you not hearing the advice here.if you decide to get discus from the sponsors and want to keep tank like that go for adults or if you decide to grow juvies out then you will have to go Bare bottom.Do 50-80% changes daily and feed 5 times a day well.id also go with lighter gravel and back ground with pigeons.Hope you heed all advice here and good luck. And dont mix the sponsers fish with the existing ones

Quintin thanks for your advice if I do decide to get more I will look into the sponsors on here. Fugu_88 the ones I have now are not skinny they are still small. I am not trying to get them to be very big and I like the way they are now. I do do about 40% water change every 3 days so I have read up on discus a lot. Btw I didn't post on here so that everyone can tell me what I might have done wrong. I am not an expert on discus I am still learning. I post on here to show what my tank looks like now thanks anyway.
