Hey just wondering about canister filters. I have a reaction 4 on my African cichlid tank but I'll be looking to add one to my discus tank. Is the eheim pro series all its cracked up to be ? I read some reviews about it leaking and that's my worst fear which has made me shy away from it. If anyone has any input it would be great.

I have the pro 2026 and 2028. They have both leaked at the motor head. They were slow leaks and since I have these canisters in plastic wash bins, the small lead didn't cause any trouble. Eheim sent replacement parts and they were easy to fix. I've been running them for about 10 years.

Here's an old post about my leak: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?83096-Eheim-2028-leaking-anyone-have-the-same-problem&highlight=

I've been running them for about 10 years.

Prof Series II from Eheim is one of the most durable filters.
Seals it`s change "usualy" every year .... not after ten. In this way with a maximum 10$ you can ensure that you have no leak....
For me the 2078 model is the best model from Eheim!

thanks guys. im thinking about throwing the reaction 4 thats currently on my african tank (with different or fresh media so no sickness spreads) on my discus tank along with the 2x AC 70's that are already on there. Then throw 2x what ever canister filter i find to be the best on my african tank because they are pretty darn dirtyy fish.. i really want the eheim pro 3 im just so nervous about it leaking when im not around to notice. is there a thicker seal or gasket or O-ring i could get that would make it safer ? im going to be reasearching for the next month or 2 along with you guys and the helpful people on simply discus.

I wouldn't even consider any type of modification to the original equipment. Why don't you call, or send an email to Eheim and ask them about their service history? Just a thought.

Have run the 2075 on my 125g for several years w/ no problem. Along w/ XP4 & 2 A/C 500s (110s) that I've had forever, they do a great job! "T"

I just bought an Eheim Pro 3 2078 from Big Al's online, for just over $200. I'm not saying it's the best, I don't know which one is the best.

I've been running Fluval since I got my first one for free. That was about 4 years ago. As everyone has their own preferences, Fluval is definitely mine. I have a Whisper HOB on my QT and just not totally satisfied with it so I just added a model 30 HOB. Super happy camper now. I'm currently have a 205 and 406 canister and when I get to my final home, I plan on FX series for my 265 gallon.

Mines 2071 doesn't leak but the removable adaptor will be the weak part to eheim. I replaced three already!!!

You're quite welcome. Are you looking to put the FX6 on your 125 ? If so I would do a little more investigating on that model for that size tank. Although more is generally better, sometimes there can be too much. According to Fluval, that model moves just over 900 gph and that could be too much current for Discus. Perhaps adding a spray bar would help even out the flow to make it better for them.

I did experiment with my 406 on my 40 gal and changed back to my 205. The Discus weren't swimming normally, seemed to be struggling to eat, and just appeared stressed with the 406. After the change, everything has been great. How this helps ya.

Thank you for the advice, yes I have a 406 on a 75 gal and a 206 on a 40gal.i will give a try and stock the filter with lots of media to slow the water flow and I think I got caught on the discus virus so I know I’ll be buying I bigger one pretty soon LOL
