I had both ammonia and nitrites for weeks in a juvie tank, and controlled it with Prime per instructions, no problem

check and make sure your tank is cycle and enough media for BB ..... the BB should be converting ammonia and nitrites

If you have any ammonia or nitrites your tank is not cycled. Be very careful, nitrites and ammonia are killers. I added ten 4" to 5" one month ago after doing a six week fish less cycle and never once had any nitrites or ammonia after the fish were added. It sounds like your tank wasn't ready but that is hindsight, do whatever you can to keep the nitrites down. Lots and lots of water changes and go easy on the food is all I can think of others may know what else can be done. It is very important that you stay on top of this or your fish will suffer and/or die.
