Lots and lots of bio-media. And some cheap-a** poly-fil from Walmart. :)

+1 with me. Bottom tray has the oldest, top the newest. When it totally breaks down, the trays get rotated. Why ? Why put anything else in it ?

55gal - Cascade 1000 filter with coarse sponge at bottom , purigen in middle, neolite at top tray. Water looks great. :) so far..

Renas with Black Sponges, ceramic rings, filter floss. Never had a problem with this layout.

sponge, Seachem Matrix, Purigen, bio rings in the Fluval 406 and in the Marineland 350 just the Seachem matrix. I rinse off the Matrix with cold filtered water when cleaning the filters

Deep blue polyfiber, sponge, matrix and purigen!
The poly fiber is very durable and can be reused and washed with dirty while during a WC.
