So a while back Larry sent me his remaining wild angels. Five total and two types. I will look up the type later. First I bought a 50 gallon Seaclear with the blue background and did this with it.

http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad95/Second_Hand_Pat/Wild%20Angels/DSC_5181_zps93391932.jpg (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/Second_Hand_Pat/media/Wild%20Angels/DSC_5181_zps93391932.jpg.html)

The blue in a wild angel tank seemed like a no no. You will note that the wood is floating as the tank was setup this afternoon.

Thanks Al and I have heard that but willing to get it a try. The three larger ones were sold as red shoulder Manacapuru angels. Ryan think they are a cross due to the blue sheen in with the red spots.

Pat, You have some nice ones there! Angels were the first fish I fell in love with, both wilds and domestics. I was able to keep both together in a show tank in the hatchery I built. I had nine pair of domestics I was raising fry from at one time. I lost all my photos when HP stopped their photo site. I failed to get them downloaded before it was taken down.

Thanks Dick, that is a shame about your pictures :( Don't tell anyone but I did not care for angelfish until Larry sent these guys to me even then it took a while. I have them in a low, dark tank and the angels were always shiddish and hiding. It was time to bring them into the light and I can only say WOW. :D

There is a lot of confusion about Manacapurus. The first ones to appear years ago from that location were red shouldered (you can see it in the back of Heiko's first book, I think) and so the Manacapuru craze started. That led to more imports in the following years but those fish did not express the trait when grown out. It's said that the red shouldered ones are caught in Lake Manacapuru (which is the southern part of the river) and the non-red ones come from the river itself. It is a huge river system, so there could be any number of variations of angels in that river. From Wikipedia:

Manacapuru River is a river of Amazonas state in north-western Brazil. It flows into the Amazon River (Solimões section) at the city of Manacapuru, about 80 km (50 mi) upstream (west) from Manaus. Parts of the river are very broad, appearing as elongated lakes, with the uppermost known as Lago Grande de Manacapuru ("Large Manacapuru Lake") and the lowermost, near where it merges into the Amazon, as Lago Manacapuru ("Lake Manacapuru").

You'll definitely know the red-shouldered ones when you see them because the color starts to develop fairly early.

To add to the confusion, yours don't look anything like the non-red Manacapuru I've seen other breeders working with. LOL. But who knows, really.

Either way, I always find angels enjoyable in their own way. They are not discus but they come with their own set of quirks and behaviors that are interesting. Have fun with them. ;)

Thanks Ryan, I understand these were sold under the red shoulder label yet do not express the full red shoulder but instead the green/blue sheen. Either way they are gorgeous fish and very different from discus. So if I get lucky and mange to get some fry they may not show the interesting shoulder coloration of the parents?

Not sure really. Steve bought them at a local aquarium. (I think he got the blacks at Tropic Isle in Framingham, MA and the others at Patenaude's in New Bedford) I always liked angels and they are so much easier to care for than discus.

So have been dropping the TDS in the angelfish tank and finally observed a behavior other then just chasing. Two were facing each other and each fish was doing a quick repeating pulse of the entire body starting with the head. It was similar to the discus shimmy but a more violent, larger movement. Guessing it is a dominance behavior.

Yeah, Ive read here and there that wild angels grow considerably fast; Of course with good food and everything. If thats true you'll soon have to move them lol

Good looking wilds - its tough to get them with intact/unbent dorsals. I've found them way more territorial than domestics. 5 in a 55gal did not work out well for me. I bought F1 Brazilians from Bill @ Inland Empire a couple months ago and they are really turning out nicely. I have 7 growing out in a 90gal currently.

Your Angels are beautiful, Pat.
Angels are a very close second to Discus as my favorite fish.
In fact, one of the first egg-laying species that spawned for me was Angels - in a 40 gal tank about 40 or so years ago.
I was so uptight about doing it 'right', that once the eggs were laid, I covered the tank completely all around with towels for the first few days, so as not to startle them so they wouldn't eat the eggs. I was really afraid that's what they would do as a means of trying to 'protect' them ! LOL
But hey, I learned as I went, and even managed to raise a few fry from that spawning.
You've convinced me - I'm going to do another Angel tank next - I haven't kept Angels for over 15 years.

Pat, next time I will! I just wanted to get my babies home and make sure that they were settled and that I had lots of time to spend with them as they adjusted to their new home. They are being spoiled. They keep look for me to feed them but I will keep them on a a diet today and let them get used to the feeding schedule which is about four times a day when I am home. This video is posted above. If you look close you will see the tube down on the largest angel and a hint of a tube on one of the others. So betting these guys actually did spawn but I sure did miss it if they did.

Maybe Rufus, have tubes showing tonight yet see no indication of prespawning activities.

Yes Dick, the tube is up on the female and just visible on the male. Male is chasing everyone.

You'll know when they spawn. Angels, particularly wild angels, are notoriously aggressive toward tankmates once they spawn. Mine would turn completely sideways and dart at fish across the tank.

Keep a close eye on them. Wild angels in small tanks (under 6') are very rough on each other. I never had luck in anything less than my 150.

Thanks Ryan, I have noticed since the last WC that the "male" of the pair has been escalating hostilities towards the other angels in the tank as last night I removed the extra angels for their own safety. My impressions with watching the angels is they would do best in larger tanks.

I spoke with Al briefly and he said he had even seen angels go after each others eyes. Mean fish indeed.

Here's some pictures of the pair. These pictures were taken during the day and the angels tend to be rather light. I also feed them some small moths, they really liked them.

It's good that you have some dithers in there. Hopefully that will keep the pair from beating up each other. I've found that sometimes angels, like other SA/CA cichlids, will attack each other when kept in single pairs. I had a gorgeous koi pair several years ago but the female would routinely beat the crap out of the male after they spawned. The dithers should redirect some of that nervous energy.

What's the temp? Try cooling them down a little bit during your next w/c.

Thanks Ryan, temp is around 80. WCs are about 78. They seem pretty calm with each other. They spend lots of time staring at stuff but last night noted a bit of pecking when can be seen towards the end of the video.
