I know this is an unconventional method of growing out but in the circumstances how do they look? 2 weeks in this tank. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/29/upuqahaz.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/29/e4a3a6ah.jpg

They look fine but the trouble with trying to grow them out in planted tanks will take several months to show itself. It is an accumulation of junk in the substrate that gets them if you feed heavy. If you don't feed heavy to keep the substrate clean then it is the lack of food that tends to get them. It can be done but it is very hard to keep everything right.

Good luck.

they are too cute! go for the planted if you can handle it, your discus look great in there. kudos to you if you can grow them out in a planted.

Looking Very good Colin. Keep it clean as you can and please do post more pics as they grow. I'd advise staying away from BH mixes if the tank has substrate...it will be very hard to keep clean. You might want to focus on foods that stay in the water column more than sinking rapidly.

Thanks Allwin. They eat 4-5 times a day. Amazingly my wife has agreed to feed them twice a day while I'm at work. As long as she can just dump it in :). I do a 15-20% wc each night to clean the substrate and a 50-60% twice a week. I've been feeding bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, micro cichlid pellets and cobalt flakes.

Thanks brewmaster! I've actually heard somewhat contradictory things about BH so I've been avoiding it. I will definatly post more pics as they grow.

Ok john/brewmaster it's been almost a month and they are almost 4 months old. I realize they are probably smaller than they would be at max grow out but how do they look? I've been doing 50%+ wc daily to keep the substrate as clean as possible. 83350833518335283353

They look really nice. Nice shapes, small eyes. Is this a mixed group? It also looks like some Snakeskins in there.

Is that sand or pool sand for the substrate? It's a little more forgiving due to it's density than gravel which only accumulates deadly, toxic gunk. The gunk tends to say more on the surface. If you can't go bare bottom, this is better than gravel. but bare bottom is the best.

They look just fine - maintain the 50% daily wcs and religiously clean up the substrate from excess uneaten food after feedings, and your discus should do well, even if they don't manage to reach maximum potential growth and eventual size.

Thanks for the responses everyone, it's really good to hear from some experts that They are doing well. I would like to go bb but my wife have me he'll when I told her I was going to pull everything out of the display tank. So.....

It's actually just the nat geo sand from petsmart. Everything seems to stay on top though. The fish are actually all from one pair of Wayne NG F1 leopard snakeskins. So I have both leopards and just plain snakeskin.

If your ultimate goal is to have the biggest discus, then so be it. But everything is a personal choice. My fish keeping is not about having the biggest and fattest fish possible by overfeeding the fish and having to do all the extra work that comes with it.
