Recommended sump gallon size?

A tip or two would be a great help from the community regarding sump tank size (gallon) for a fish room.

fish room have the following tanks, but isn't setup yet on a sump system.
8x 40 gal breeder tank
1x 75 gal
1x 90 gal
1x 100gal

Have a 55 gallon tank that i'm considering could be a sump. Would this work or should i shoot for a larger size?
*All 40gal & the 75gal will have 1" drainage and 90 & 100gal will have 2" drainage.

Are you planning to use one tank as a sump for all the tanks you mentioned?

I would look into a 75 gallon or 90 gallon if you are using just one tank.

What is the Rule of Thumb when considering a sump tank?

The rule for sumps are the bigger the better or whatever the space you have will allow. For my 220 gal I had a 140 gal sump but it was too big so I downgraded to a 75 gal. If the space permits then go with a 90 gal.

The 90 gallon sump would be fine. Do you have a design on the inside of the sump? How many chambers are you planning and what are you putting inside it? There are some good YouTube videos on sump design.

just personal experience, 20% of your tank volume is good for ME and of course like dragon1974 said, the bigger the better. currently i have ~75g sump for 300G tank. Also agree with Jeff, 90G sump is ok, not less.

Thanks to all whom responded...will post photos when it's all set and done...
Only media I'm going to using is Porte sponge, ammonia remover, ceramic rings. All in one chamber.

Hey PK, you should really think about doing the K1 bed + Matrix + Poret + Prefilter
