water softener question

I am running my water through a softener. I need to replace the salt, what is the best type of salt to use, since the water is used to refill my discus display tank?

I think it's best if you bypass the water softener for your tank's water changes.

Thanks, got it. If I don't use it everything the water touches develops blue curds. And the water tastes like iron. I think people don't realize how mineral rich well water can be when it comes from a well.
