hmmm indeed. Would like to see the progression here, that is if you don't cull very heavy handed.

The Hmm part is the two very distinct phenotypes, one in which the fry appear to be golden based......watch the video for the orange fry.....

Rick,

Very nice! Are these orange ones albino by any chance? Maybe the parents are Albino intermediate of some sort.

Nope, not albino's, my money (and a bet with Yim11 btw) is on goldens.

Rick, does that mean there's a chance of golden leopards?

Are the fry any weaker than their darker siblings? I've known a few people with golden based leopards and they seemed weaker and slower growing than other discus.

I think there is a chance, but I am not positive the fry are goldens, I just feel strongly enough to bet a lunch/dinner on it (however not strong enough to bet a weeks paycheck :) ) I would think however, if I am right, the chance for golden leopards would be very high......

Not at this point in their development, no. I have however witnessed what you are asking in other goldens, but not all of them. So whether or not slow growth and weaker fry is a product of the golden gene specifically, or a product of over-excessive line breeding, I am not really sure. I do know that a current batch of golden based snow leopards I have spawned and am currently raising are extremely slow growers, yet another batch of golden based fish I am raising are every bit as fast growers as their non-golden siblings.

When I do notice the slow down in growth, it usually does not kick in until 1-2". They seem to keep pace up to that point, then start falling behind. However my sample size is extremely limited, so I would take that for what it is worth, just an observation based on a handful of batches so far.

The PM certainly swings things more in your favor but still too early to pick a restaurant.

If you recall - the PE x GLS cross had a few 'lighter'/different ones early, they ended up as just reg spotted so that's why I'm wanting to see these at 2-3" to be sure.

Also I need the extra time to save up for all the sh*t you have threatened to order.

Well I had been following this thread because I was very interested in what the cross was producing and wondering what the genetic background of the pair must be....................................... but now I see there is another reason I should be following it!!!!

Do I now understand that Jim has been breeding a "MUTT" cross???????? The same guy that gives Rick so much heck about crosses??????

When I was breeding the PE a few years ago, I noticed two color variation in the offspring. Some were much lighter but not as light as yours.

It's just not about being lighter, it's the fact they are orange.
