I would like to know if anyone have tried to do a preventive procedure to control discus diseases like parasites, fungus, gillflukes, etc. Aside from the normal daily WC, water quality check, temp monitoring.
For example, Is it advisable to give deworming medicines like anti-parasitic drug/metronidazole every month or so. Considering that discus are susceptible to this diseases, why not conduct a proactive approached or precautionary treatment or doing this will do more harm to our discus.
Need some advice/feedback/comments on the matter. Im new in the discus world. tnxs

Short answer - No.
Think of it this way, would you take a parecetamol just in case you got a headache?

Agreed, apart from a one time de-worming (usually done in QT), "pro-active" treatment is a terrible idea. Many of these medications take their toll on the fish's kidneys, liver, and spleen.

Rick, at what point would you deworm? Recievd my fish from Hans about 5 weeks ago. Fish are about 3" give or take depending on which of the 10 you measure.

If they have settled in then they should be ok to de-worm. Now I am not saying the fish have worms, just I do it as routine maintenance to all fish before I bring them into my fish room. For me this is a personal choice, but when in doubt ask Hans. :)

More discus are killed by meds than anything else. Anything you put in the liver has to take out. All meds have side effects...even if you don't see them.

+1 on this preventive meds are a bad idea. Metro once a month will do nothing but give your discus a resistance to the medication and when you do need to use metro it won't work.....My two cents........Josie

I have a sick oranda..am I in the right forumerr not really, you should probably try and find one that deals with goldfish, perhaps a koi forum may help.
