117 gallon tank setup question

My current tank:

30x30x30 cube glass (117 gallon)
20? gallon refugium with diy algae scrubber
Mag 9.5 return pump
2 returns and one drain

Goal/Intentions:
5 Discus
Barebottom
Driftwood
Maybe tetras or some bottom dwellers

If I understand correctly, the main reasons why many suggest to do daily to 2-3 times water changes a week is to reduce nitrate levels?

Hi,
More wc's decrease contaminants including nitrates but other organics as well. It also keeps the bacteria in check through cleanliness.
Sometimes the shallower tanks are tolerated better by discus, but for 5 discus you have plenty of surface area.
Might be difficult to clean the deepest parts.

For your stock I would add at some more discus to make them feel comfortable.
