I'd like to reach out to you guys and girls that are great with cameras.. looking for ones that consider themselves semi-pros, or advanced hobbyists, maybe you even have a photography business. We have some projects that we have undertaken here and could use your expertise...details will follow on those.

But what I'd like to do is get some info from those interested in participating... So here is what I'd like to ask. If you are interesting in maybe getting involved in helping others here with the wonderful hobby of photography, sound of here in this thread. Tell us about yourself, your experience and your gear, and best of all, please post a few of your best or favorite pics to show off a bit.. These pics need not be discus or fish related. We are looking for technique and skill.

In order to participate, you need to really know the ins and outs of cameras.. particularly digital cameras, and consider yourself a advanced photographer.

I know we have some really good ones heres so hopefully you'll find this intriguing... and post.

Thanks ,
SD Team

I hate to be the first person posting as I know there are some amazing photographers on this forum. I am also sure I won't be the youngest.
I started taking pictures in the early 70s (that's 1970) and have been through lots of cameras and accessories. My interests have always been in nature photography and specifically underwater photography, (read: more accessories). I retired a few years back and now spend a lot of time with my camera. Most recently I have tried to improve my on land skills after spending almost four years doing exclusively underwater work.
I suspect I can best help Nikon shooters as I have always used Nikon equipment. Not because I think any one system is better, but there comes a time when you accumulate so much stuff, especially lenses, that changing is just to costly. However discussions about technique span any system.
I have taught some beginner workshops and write for an on line UW Photo magazine so if I can help, I would be more than happy to assist.

Thanks Paul and Greg.
The third shot is not a post processing image. People see that image and ask what did I do in Photoshop. I don't own PS (but can offer some help with Aperture and Lightroom).
Only two things were done to that image out of the camera. It was cropped length wise to give the Pano look and saturation was added. I was taught by old school, get it in the camera, photographers...

Never thought it was a PS effect :) - looks like a mix of a dragged shutter and ICM - cracking shot either way.

Mind you these are just quick slide scans I did as Jpegs, I have TIFF versions as well that are huge. Theres been no post processing really on these except some cropping and maybe brightness contrast..

Great shots everybody.
I would like to suggest that since this thread was started to impart some photo knowledge, that when we post images that EXIF settings be posted as well. This will let people see how images were created.
I have always enjoyed shooting water and the effects of slow shutter speed on water. This usually, but not always requires a tripod.
The first image is from Great Falls Virginia two nights ago. It was taken well after sunset so that the sky and water would have roughly the same exposure. This is not an HDR image, just the result of standing out in the cold a little longer. Nikon D3s, @ 35mm, ISO 200, F9, Shutter speed 13 seconds.
The second image was also taken at Great Falls which has world class white water. This Kayaker was facing upstream but fairly stable in the eddy of the current. So I tried to capture an image showing the water movement while the kayaker was holding fairly still. @120mm, ISO 400, F14, 0.4 sec.

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and will soon be embarking on Discus Husbandry. Thanks to all the great folks on this forum, I will be fulfilling a life long dream of raising Discus. It has been on my to do list since I was a 9 year old. I have been an avid photographer since I was 10. My first serious camera was a Nikon Ftn, circa 1973. I have dabbled with photography for over 40 years and currently shoot sports, landscape, astrophotography and previously underwater as well. I currently shoot with Nikons, D3s, D800 and have owned the D70, D2x, Nikonos IV, along with an assortment of smaller travel cameras such as the Panasonic LX7, sony mirrorless cameras, etc. I am a long time user of photoshop having bought my first copy back in 1995.

Here is a shot from 2013 taken with the D3s with the Nikkor 14-24mm 2.8:

is that the sound barrier being broken?

Ricardo,

Yes I think the cone forms just as the jet is flirting with the sound barrier. At least that is my understanding. I've only seen this happen that one time as the planes are not allowed to actually break the sound barrier during the air shows. too many windows in San Fran that may shatter. It was pretty cool as the cone would form, disappear and re appear again for very short periods of time.

is that the sound barrier being broken?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vapor_cone These can form even at lower speeds if the conditions were right. The plane is basically forcing clouds out of the moist air. It would happen on high speed turns or going vertical and doesn't always just happen straight line. In the right conditions the faster they go the easier to create them. Really cool to see.

SteveCA

This photo could be cropped wider, maybe to fill a 16 by 9 screen. But wider than that may degrade the composition. A panorama would have been interesting but i didnt shoot it that way.. Next time out, i may try that. Thanks for the idea!

This thread got me motivated to process some shots that have been sitting in my computer for almost two years. Here is one from Mono Lake, CA. The shot was taken at 4:30am, 14mm, F2.8, 20 second exposure, ISO 6400 on a Nikon D3s with the Nikkor 14-24mm 2.8. I used Stellarium to figure out the best time and direction (compass) to capture this photo with the Milky way in the proper position. Stellarium (a free app) is great for pre-planning astro Photo shoots. It allows you to see exactly what the night sky will look like at a specific GPS coordinate, at a particular date and time of night.

Thanks. I stupidly left this shot unprocessed for two years until yesterday.

The D3s sensor is excellent at 6400. To this day, for low light, it is still the top dog in DXO high ISO sensor ratings. Amazing considering it was made in 2009. My D800 is almost as good but you cant beat low light on this 12 mp sensor.

Btw, i applied noise reduction in the RAW conversion.

Excellent Steve. Is this a single exposure or a stack? Any foreground lighting the rocks? One of the toughest parts of a shot like this, IMO, is getting that perfect reflection on the water. Really good shot.

I also second Stellarium being great for astrophotography. Gives you an exact time and date for whats in the sky that you want to shoot, and where.

Matt

This is a single exposure with foreground lighting (used a flashlight sparingly). I like your idea about shooting the foreground and sky separately though and am looking forward to trying that next time out. It was pitch black out there so none of the foreground would have had much detail. We were lucky to find shallow ponds in front of those tufas. I went back there this past January and those ponds were bone dry as the lake level is lower now than it was in 2013 when this shot was taken.

Nice shot! I love the soft glow effect. It makes the photo dreamy which is something i try to accomplish in some of my photos. Did you shoot this with your D800? I have found that my D800 rarely if ever needs HDR. I expose for the highlights and pull the darker parts out in RAW conversion.

Here is a shot taken in Oregon this past summer. Nikon D800, Nikkor 14-24mm, 14mm, 2 second exposure f 7.1, ND filter (cant remember which one), shot while standing in knee deep frigid water. I had to reset the tripod after each and every wave.

Here is a photo from the Race Track in Death Valley National Park. This was shot in 2006 on my Nikon D2x using a Tamron 14mm 2.8. It was a long drive to get out there and even longer driving back in the dark over a rough rock strewn dirt road. I've only been out there once as a result of the long drive.

Rick, I dont really know. As far as I know, no one has ever seen them do their thing. I actually think the aliens do it in the middle of the winter and probably at night lol. I have seen tracks that change directions multiple times. In fact, one of them made a triangle looking like the number 4 before coming to a rest. It is a cool place. I would like to camp overnight out there and just star gaze and shoot some photos with the milky way in the background. Maybe next time...

Looking at the map, you arent that far away from Death Valley. It is definitely worth a trip but go in the winter, early spring or late fall. Its too damn hot otherwise. I've gone in late November (perfect), December (even better) and March (too hot during the day for me).

I will research it. I have actually never even looked it up to be honest. Many talk about Joshua Tree but I haven't been there either

I would drive there via 14 to 178 to 190. I highly recommend it for photographers, hikers, etc. It is a national treasure imho. The range of landscapes available at death valley is amazing. Here is another photo from 2006 shot on my Nikon D2x (crop sensor) with a Tamron 14mm 2.8, taken in Badwater, Death Valley, the lowest point in the lower 48 states at 282 feet below sea level: I think I should go back as it would be better with my full frame D800 and 14-24mm nikkor.

They have actually geotagged the rocks! If it should rain in the winter, and the water freezes, and the wind picks up, the ice breaks up and piles up on the rocks, acting like a sail to push the rocks along, leaving a trail in the soften playa. In a place that normally gets 2" of rain a year, that combination of events doesn't happen that often.

Steve, we spent the night and cat napped in the car, ate barbecued power bars! Sunset, moonrise and sunrise. It is a hell of a drive and I won't do that again! I posted other shots earlier on other threads. Neat to see.

Spending the night sounds like big fun. You got some cool shots. The rock in your last shot looks like the same rock I shot in 2006. Take a look at the rock and tell me what you think. Spending the night would break that long drive up just enough for it to be tolerable. It is way too much driving and banging in one day!

Joshua Tree is cool. I've never been to Death Valley though....except the one in Clemson SC ;). Dying to go though, on my list to get shots like above.
