Lithopanes
A lithopane is usually a very thin 3d carving that allows “light to pass through it from behind.” This gives it a very life like appearance. Any photograph can be used and made into a lithopane. I use “white acrylic” for the carving. The carving is produced on a special rotary carving machine that is computer controlled. Read about it on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithophane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithophane)
The carving can be placed in front of a lamp, light or window.
See Examples http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=lithophane&qpvt=lithopane&FORM=IGRE (http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=lithophane&qpvt=lithopane&FORM=IGRE)
Another method to use the lithopane “carving” is to put a dark backround behind the carving and let the light shine on the front to give a 3d effect to a picture.
I have software to eliminate the backround in photos and just carve part of a picture if that is what you want.
Costs for lithopanes, just the carving, not put in a picture frame are as follows. (sizes in inches)
8x10 = $60.00
8x8 = $45.00
6x6 = $35.00

Ardan,

It has been a pleasure to work with you on this and help refine the process a bit. The lithopane you did of my in-laws 60th wedding anniversary came out awesome with all the detail from the picture and will make a very special Christmas gift. I plan on having you do a couple more, also for Christmas gifts so watch your inbox. :D
