View Full Version : Pat's 180 Build

Some of you may know that I have a 180 (72x24x24) on order and hope to receive it in about three weeks or so. I do have a canopy and stand which was built of solid oak for a 180 I had back in 1986. We recently pulled the stand and canopy down from the barn loft and it is in prime condition. I was a rather surprised about that (pictures later).

The tank will come with a 64 gallon sump (48x18x18) and I have decided on the final design for the sump. It will have a drip plate on the inlet side of the sump and no internal chambers. I will use poret foam to place chambers where I want which allows for maximum customization.

I have had the tank customized a bit. The tank came with a center overflow and I wanted double overflows in the back corners. The overflow dimensions are 12x6 inches and I asked for the long side of the overflow to be placed on the side vs the back of the tank. A bit ugly from the side and easier to see and maintain.

I will be ordering a background from Universal Rocks which is the rocky background and I will need to order a custom size. I will also order two extra bits to wrap the overflows so the background will hopefully look seamless.

The lights will be from buildmyled. Most like the Fish Focus Red, unsure of fixture length. I will be ordering one for the 90 and will use that to guide me on what I will need for the 180. So here are my initial plans.

Sounds cool!

What are your plans for the tank? Will it be BB? Sand? Do you plan on adding Plants or Driftwood?

I had a 180 reef with a 50G sump and the best thing I ever did was put a door on the right side so I could slide the sump in and out of the stand incase I ever needed to. It was rare when I used it, but I did need it a couple times and I was so grateful I didn't have to take the tank down to get the sump out.

Whiskey, it will be a biotope for wild Tefe's :) so sand, nice driftwood, blackwater, and no plants. I think I can unscrew the side panel if needed for sump removal if needed.

Not sure I really know Ricardo. I think what I paid for these two pieces are reasonable considering the size of the pieces. If you have a particular scape in mind and you find the right piece it gives you a little extra motivation. :) I picked up this piece for about $16. It is 10x7x6 and hope it will be a natural looking extension to the piece I have sitting on the front porch. It may be too small but a similar but much larger piece was $112 which I felt was a bit pricey.

Well, long story short...The tank and sump arrived three weeks ago and everything looked perfect from the outside. Removed the top of the crate for the tank and there were two cracks in corners in one of the openings (remember that this is an acrylic tank). One of the cracks went clear through the acrylic and started down the front of the tank for about an inch and a half.

The tank is insured so I am waiting for the shipping company to pick it up and the new tank should ship the end of next week. Best guess on the cause of the damage is something heavy was stacked on top of the crate as the "Do Not Stack" cone was missing from the top of the crate. I was bummed.

Universal Rock Ricardo. I am getting two 48x24 backgrounds and cutting to fit. That way I do not need a custom background.

Nice. I'm looking at them to get a background for my 75g as well. I want the really slim line one they have though so that it covers up the overflow I plan to put in place that spans almost the whole tank on the top of the tank.

Similar to this:

They are very thin and will not float which is a plus.

NICE! Just added that to my wishlist! I hadn't seen that one. That would be more than enough for my tank. I will silicone it in place since I really do not like the blue background. With the extra 4" at the top, I can use that for the overflow :)

I have one of these backgrounds in my tank. They are pretty nice! Just make sure you do a good job sealing the edges with silicone to prevent small fish and crud from getting behind it.The "clips" it comes with are a joke. The background is hard silicone like material so they are pretty easy to trim.

Good to know. Since I have an acrylic tank I am thinking I may need a good amount of silicone to make this work. Are the backs of the backgrounds flat or are the rock-like? If that makes sense

Second Hand Pat
03-19-2015, 10:51 PM
Ricardo, the backs of the backgrounds are not flat so you will need to work at finding the contact points. Here is what the background looks like in a 90.

The back is bumpy, not flat. I put silicone around all the edges and then put silicone on all the high points along with some globs here and there. Then went around the edges with a small bead after background was in place.

They are definitely much thinner than the other 3D backgrounds I've seen. I always avoided them because they took up 2" or so of valuable aquarium width. These look very nice! Are they easy to remove if you don't want them anymore? I'm assuming they're easier to scrape out of a glass tank than an acrylic tank...

Second Hand Pat
03-21-2015, 08:36 PM
Thanks Ryan, these are only 1/4 inch thick and since the background does not float it did not need a ton of silicone to hold it in place. On this acrylic 180 I am only siliconing the pieces to the overflows. The background piece between the overflows will be held in by the background pieces on the side of the overflows.

Pat, how do you keep the background from getting a build-up of algae? And if it does build up, how do you clean it once it's in the tank? I've had 3-D backgrounds, and gave them up due to the hassle of cleaning ~ glass is sooo much easier. Also, love the acrylic, I'm thinking of replacing my display tank with that, when I get rich! Ha, LOL!

Don, this background is only 1/4 of an inch thick so hardly 3D. I tend to keep my lights on the tank low so have no algae buildup. The wilds look great with a dim light setting. This tank and sump was about $2000 with shipping so no complaints there.

It is getting closer Jacklyn. I ordered some plumbing parts I could not find locally last night. I am thinking about moving the Tefe's into this tank which will give me nine fish. I still think I am about two weeks out before the tank is setup and running. Today I need to move the sump inside and see how I will get it under the stand. Might have to move the stand up on one side, position the sump in the stand footprint and ease the stand back down over the sump...bit of a PITA.

it aint larger by much. one day I aspire to have bigger tanks full of wilds like you, but I think it will have to wait until we either finish the basement and make the floor level, or move to a different house that has a portion on a cement pad. it aint larger by much. one day I aspire to have bigger tanks full of wilds like you, but I think it will have to wait until we either finish the basement and make the floor level, or move to a different house that has a portion on a cement pad. My 1949 home is at its limit with the current tanks I have I think.

Sounds like it Jacklyn. My house is on a cement slab (no basements in Florida due to a high water table) is no issues with tanks on the first floor.

Ok, here's the tank with the background. Not a great picture but gives you an idea.

I love it. Looks great. Can't wait to buy this background too. I can't get my project going until my pump is for sale. It has been out of stock for like a month already :(.

Thanks Ricardo, bummer on the pump being out of stock. I use a mag-drive 7 on my 75. Will be driving this baby with a mag-drive 9.5.:)

Yeah I remember your recommendation. I really like the feed mode feature because I have such a lousy memory and I like the fact that I can alter the pump rates to suite my overflow.

oooooooh, ahhhhhhhhhh, that background looks sweet Pat. Good job with the silicone and white bottom. I can hardly wait to see the wonderful pieces of DW and fish swimming around in there. I think that if I reincarnate to a fish, I would like to be a discus fish swimming in this tank.

Ah thanks Jacklyn, there is a picture of the main driftwood piece in the first dozen posts of the thread. It's a beast. :)

Finally making progress. Lots of start and stops :) The tank is inside on the stand with the sump underneath. Tom and I pieced together the plumping between the tank and the sump today. I will be gluing it tomorrow. Went with hard plumbing this time so a first.

Plumbing picture. Tee-ed the drains together and the return is in the middle. Have unions in case some adjustments are needed in the future. The tank is pulled away from wall for easier accessibility.

Attachments to the sump inlets. The sump is wrapped in shower liner which will be unwrapped once the tank is in place and laid out in the stand to catch drips etc and is used as water collector for any leaks.

Gluing PVC is a hair raising experience and it dries way too fast. However, so far so good. The critical parts are done. :D:D

Bump! What did you end up putting in this tank?

Nothing yet. Finally got the poret foam for the sump, cut it to the size needed and put the sump back together. Now need to run some water back into the sump and check the bulkhead repair. Then finish the return plumbing to the tank and should be in business. The Tefes will go in this tank. This has not been an easy build. :(

Very, very nice Pat :-) Had taken a break from our Forum. Acrylic vs. glass....I like the acrylic. Viewing your pictures, maybe I can dream of one ! Looking forward to the pictures of final setup, you have taught us patience :-).....

My Tefe group Zach.

Oh ok, and I'm assuming you will move the Angels to their current tank? I saw a mention that they were almost outgrowing the 75.
