Blue Scorpion Discus fry
Spawned 2-03-2016

This discus was sold as a blue scorpion by Alberta Discus in Canada. he doesnt look much like the one posted above... he came a bit stunted, with big eyes, and his crooked bars arent perfect, but he is healthy and happy and has a great personality. he shimmers like crazy in the light, looks almost metallic, sometimes with a violet hue. such a pretty fish

Love the different shades!
Love the different shades!
ur blue scorpion def looks more like what i expect a blue scorpion to look like, with the spotting.
i didnt choose the one that was sent to me, so i was surprised when it arrived. my guy's bars arent usually out either, but he flashes them whenever i hold the camera up. ive grown to like him, esp the metallic sheen which i cant seem to capture with the camera.

I do not believe this to be a blue scropion. This looks more like some form of fineline SS or even a turk cross?

Have a pic? I really like this fish. Noticed today he is getting a red border on the tip of his fins. May be from the bio pigment FDBW and considered undesirable but I personally think it looks really cool

Are thr spots considered peppering?
No. Peppering is a trait only attributed to pigeon blood discus

My checkerboard pigeon shows very slight peppering but that is due to my dark substrate. My golden checkerboard shows no peppering same with my rafflesia.
Dark substrate can cause peppering but also, from what I understand, the breeding process can also be a factor. I believe a lot of the PB strains have been bread to reduce the peppering factor.
I've seen juvies at my lfs that he has bread that shows signs of peppering before they even have color and they are in a BB tank.
Someone please correct if I'm wrong

I just got him? I think your right Rick, it was sold as a cobalt. thanks Harry, I really like him too. The iPhone pic doesn't do him justice. I bought a fuji apple at the same time and they are now in the qt tank. :)
Are thr spots considered peppering?
no, peppering looks like little black specs on the discus. this little blue discus is showing his barring in the pic tho, he flashes the bars on and off depending on his mood
below is a pic of one of my discus with peppering on his flank and face/lips. he is a lovely little boy but depending on his mood u can sometimes see his freckles a little more or less, despite the bright white backing and bottom of the tank:)
peppering is genetic, and cant be "cured", but a light back/substrate can help to reduce the appearance of it on ur fish, as they will lighten their colours to blend in with lighter surroundings. it can also be a sign of poor water quality, stress etc
u do not want to breed a pigeon blood discus to a non-pigeon blood discus because the pairing will produce heavily peppered fry
