Hi Gang,

I need some advice about potted amazon swords...I would like to treat one of my tanks for Hex. and was wondering if the swords can survive temps to 92-94 F...or should I take the plants out during the treatment??

Thanks, Lester

I would remove them, but I would also treat the plants wherever you decide to move them to. No point in treating the main tank if you will reintroduce the possibly infected plants back in.

Wait, why 92-94F?

I don't know if discus can even survive for long at that temperature...

^agree w that as well why not a short bath treatment for the hex.....

Discus can survive at that temp, but I wouldn't advise having them at that temp for an extended period of time. The highest I have gone is 94F I believe.

I was thinking about oxygen depletion, but yeah, I don't know why it needs to be at 92-94F.

yes, that is a major factor at this temp. added air is a must. Many bump up the temp for medicating purposes, which is why I was doing it when I did in the past. I would never keep discus at that temp for any other reason. The thing about high temps is that it allows for infections and diseases to advance much more quickly because of the faster metabolism that the heat induces. For this reason, you must know what you are doing when raising the heat this high and know exactly what you are trying to eradicate.

Thanks for all the responses... I will take the potted Amazon Swords out of the tanks during my treatment with metro.

They both can. In the summer as I have no AC my tanks routinely get into the upper 95*-100* for as long as the temps hold out that long. The only thing I do is lower the water a little so outputs splash into the water other than that no ill effects in years.

Hi pitdogg,

so based on your experience...amazon swords can survive in temps up into the low 90's??

hey look at it this way. In the wild they grow above and below the water I would expect the above water to be higher than low 90's in the amazon. I have not had the high 90's kill my swords yet.

I also keep mine in clay pots with flourite

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for the input...come to think of it, my fish room gets pretty warm in those hot summer days here in Maryland with temps topping 100 F on certain days. The fish have all survived without chillers but this is the first time trying Amazon Swords in pots.
