Looking for suggestion to build a low maintenance planted tank

Hi,

I have a 5ft x 2ft x 2ft bare bottom tank with around 30 2.5" to 4" discus. I like to introduce a portion (40%) of this tank with plants. I prefer introducing plants using few small round-shape-fish-jars for easy maintenance/clean bottom of tank. Can anyone please guide me step by step in this regards or any better suggestion ?..

I will be very helpful with your experienced guideline.

I'd suggest reading the "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium" by Diana Walstad, if you can get it where you're at. It goes over low tech planted setup and the various problems you can encounter. Here is a link to discussion on plants that do well at higher temperatures;

My itsy-bitsy experience with planted aquariums... I'm amazed at how little light (read = very little algae) my anubias & java ferns can survive and even grow under. Attach them to driftwood and you can have several plants with very little tank-bottom real estate used. That means easy to clean tank bottom. Just a thought and a compromise between bare-bottom & planted. Just a thought

You can look into ripariums so that way you can have bb tank, I did a planted tank with discus once but I always had fungus or bacterial problems because of the organics in the fertilised substrate.

this was my solution to creating a low maintenance tank. easy, hardy species in pots with eco complete substrate. so far so good... i also have clumps of anubias suction-cupped to the sides and back walls of the tank.

i do still have algae in the tank, and plant maintenance (trimming) is ongoing, but the tank itself is easy to clean :)
