View Full Version : Shutting down the fish room for a while...........

We own some acreage outside a small town in middle Georgia called Monticello. Saying it is out in the country is saying the least. My Father-in-law lives there on about 120 acres and we have an adjoining 5 acres. My wife has a step sister that lives on an adjoining 5 acres also. It has always been our plan to eventually build a house and move there but the date has always been something in the future. All of a sudden the time seems to be now. Funny how things just fall into place sometimes. Our plan is to put our house on the market within the next month and start moving things down. It will be at least 6 months before we can have a house on our property but my father-in-law has out buildings we can store everything in and we will temporarily move in with him. Once we are settled into our house the plan is to build a free standing fish house. Since this is going to be 6 months to a year from now I am selling most of my stock and will start over when the fish room is complete. I will probably hold on to a few of my fish but there is no way I can properly take care of them all during all of this. No plans to leave the hobby. I still plan on remaining as involved as time permits. Hopefully I will have fish before NADA 2016 takes place in Chicago. If I don't then I know I will have one of the best opportunities to get my fish room re-stocked with some killer discus!!!

Bites on having to sale most of your stock Larry but the move will be done soon. Best of luck with everything.

Thanks Pat. It does bite but it is a VERY EXCITING time for us. Last Wed I suggested to Amanda that we drive down to her fathers Thursday and stay the night so we could pick out our building site and come home Friday. We ended up coming home late Sunday night. It was so peaceful and relaxing, I just didn't want to leave!!

You're about six hours away but I might be tempted to make the drive if you have some cool cichlids that need homes. ;) Good luck with the move, Larry! A free-standing fish room would be awesome. I'd love to do something like that in the future.

Sounds like a great plan, Larry. Good luck with the building projects. If experience is any guide, you might want to add plenty of time on the "expected completion" dates, LOL.

Larry,
Best of luck with the move, Shutting down the fishroom is never fun, I still miss mine. Everyone I know in the hobby that has done so, has comeback with a bigger/better one though.:) Glad to hear you are still planning on staying in the hobby!

Enjoy the time away, sounds like you are going to busy!

Congrats Larry. We just went through the building process. It is almost complete. Little things. No fish at home yet but I started again with fish in my office. Can't wait to have some at home. A separate fish house would be a dream. Here in the north it would be a little more complicated, with heating. I suppose cooling would be the issue there. Good luck with your project.

Good luck with the move Larry. Sucks you have to sell stock but that just gives you a chance to come back bigger and stronger! And that GA crew is pretty strong as far as fish go it seems, I'm sure you can get some old lines back down the road. An outdoor separated fish house would be a dream.

Thanks for the wishes guys!! Don, you are so right about expected dates. This is the reason I'm not keeping my current stock. My Father-in-law has said we would find room and do whatever needed for me to keep them but I can't be certain of a date and even if it is a minimum of 6 months it is too long. I will have to heat and cool the building. I currently have heaters in all my tanks because my basement isn't finished and gets cold in the winter. The cost is high. My basement reaches the low to mid 80's during the summer and it is much cooler than a free standing building above ground will be. I have to be able to enjoy myself in the room and so cooling will be necessary, lol.

Good Luck Larry with the sale of your home and the hopefully on schedule home build.
I'm about 10 years away before I can even consider it for my future plans.
Make sure you don't sell to many fish or else there won't be any left for me at Nada.

All the best,
...Ralph

The Show is going to be in the "backyard" of one of our Sponsors. I have a feeling there will be more than enough discus available for purchase and if I know Josie they will be top quality.

Hope it all goes well Larry. We just moved too, and it is so nice to get all settled in and fish in their new home along with us. Your fish room will be great! Good luck with everything, especially the build.

Are you keeping the wild type Angels you got from Mug? Just curious. Also, would you tell me where you bought the Solomon? I sure would like a male like that.

Yes, I am keeping the wild and wild cross angels I got from Mug. The Lago Solomon came from Mark at Discus Origins. He wasn't able to get any Solomon's this year due to the high water but had them the previous two seasons. Hopefully this coming season he will be able to get them again.

Thanks for the info, Mr. Bugg. Mugwump will be happy to hear that you are keeping his fish. I posted your for sale list on his forum and he pm's me that he didn't see his among them.

Lol, that is sometimes the hardest part Jon. If we lose the fun then what's the point but it is easy to let it get away from us.

Thanks Liz. You know it is kinda funny. Most of my fish room has been dedicated to discus but what of my current stock am I keeping..............the wild angels from Mug, and two angel pairs that I am really having fun with right now. I have one discus pair that I haven't listed but if someone offered the right price I would sell them. Not the angel pairs though. I know I can replace my discus pairs pretty easily but I think it would not be as easy with these angels. They are really throwing some pretty cool offspring. At four months old these guys are already silver dollar size and are developing some killer fins and the platinum blues are showing a lot of glitter.

You have my email address. Please send me a pic of the Discus pair that you might part with for the right price.

I'm more into Angels myself right now. I have a cool breeding project going on that will take a lot of tank space and many generations. Still, my heart is in Discus. It's something I can't help.

Lol, I don't want to part with them. I was just saying for the right price I would in comparison to the angels that I won't sell for the right price. The pair are Piwowarski Red Turqs. Not a good pic but here they are. They are moving with me. Just laid eggs tonight. The male is a big boy and the female is pretty big also.

hi Larry,
all the best to u n come back soon....

Hey Forrest. Thanks. Those angels pictured above have been fed exclusively on your Aquabites. I have gotten amazing growth on them. At 4 months old the first batch had some that were already as big as the parents and they are big angels. Of course they got LOTS of clean water but I am very impressed with the results I am getting from your food!!!

I have all the tanks down except two 40's and four 60's. They are holding the fish I am taking with me. Your wild angels. About 20 (P Blue) Platinum and Smokey angels with the glitter gene 5 months old. About 10 Red spotted angels about 6 months old. Smokey pair and Red Spot pair. Pair of Piwo Red Turq discus with about 20 1 month old fry.

I've moved about a third of my tanks down and I have a 125, four 40's and two 29's set up empty in my Father-in-laws garage. I will wait and move the fish down when we put the for sale sign up here. Hopefully about 2 more weeks. I'm in the middle of replacing all the decking on our deck and will then move on to painting the inside of house a neutral color. Need to line someone up to replace the carpet upstairs and do a little work on the kitchen.

Here's hoping that you're further on with the move....creating your new fish room has to be kicks, all of the things you wanted in the old one can be added in now....and, of course, you can add even more tanks...LOL
