I bought a Pixma 9000 mark ii a few years back and couldn't be happier. Ink cartridges are not cheap though. Check your local CL for a better deal

A bit of reading indicates the pigment based inks have a longer self life both in albums and on the wall. The dye based printers have eight cartridges and the pigment based printers are 10 so the ink sets are a bit more pricey. This is based on a little light reading from this morning.

Pat I have not used the Canon Printers, but have heard great things about them. I use an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 which is a wide format printer (allows me to run sheets that are up to and inclusive of 13 x 19 inches)

I say find the printer that prints the biggest you think you will print and then go one size bigger as you will at some point want larger prints.

I don't print much as it is less expensive to outsource the printing to a good photo print company (I use WHCC.com) as they order ink and other print supplies in bulk. I mainly print at 8 x 10 or 13 x 19 to see how a print looks before having it printed and mounted, or to do a quick print as a gift to someone, or a business.

I printed an 8x10 of a bike race and gave it to the bike shop where I frequent (bicycle not motorcycle).

I'm still using a vintage era Canon MP610. Bought it back when I was printing a lot of marketing materials for clients and it does GORGEOUS photo printing. Every once in awhile I tell myself I should upgrade, but since I don't print very often these days I just keep putting it off.

The biggest thing for me was finding a printer that did a good job and had plenty of photo printing options, AND that used individual ink tanks. From there it's a matter of choosing the correct photo paper and nearly any decent printer can make pretty prints.

I don't bother with the smaller 4x6 paper, I just print 2 photo's per page and cut them apart. Cuz I'm lazy that way. LOL

Well I'll be gob smacked, they're still selling my printer!! Of course they've also raised the price in the last 10 years too!

Have been using an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 for about 8 years. Did have it overhauled and cleaned last year.
Pretty much use Epson papers.
My printing comes in spurts and I will often have to make multiple attempts to get the final product I want. Wasteful trial and error and I am sure I would be better if I printed regularly. Ink is expensive but I would stay with the manufacturer's ink as some of the third party stuff can be hard on the printhead/nozzles.
I do think that a print is the ultimate expression of an image and I love it when a photo that I like shows well on paper.

Costco is the one because ink is the killer for long run. Plus, they keep making better ones in 1-2years.
